WITNESSES SUN-VIZOR, EYE-SHADE, AND ADVERTISING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 18, 1912.
Application filed March 20, 1912. Serial No. 685,133.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS M. HAG- cnnrr, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Sun-Vizor, Eye-Shade, and Advertising Device, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my present invention is to devise a novel sun vizor, eye shade and advertising device which may be readily manufactured from an integral piece of material, thereby adapting the same to be shipped in a flat or knocked down condition and which is of simplified construction and can be economically manufactured from a blank of material.
A further object of my invention is to devise a novel construction of a sun vizor, eye shade and advertising device which can be readily adjusted to fit upon the head beneath the hat of the wearer, and provided with a projecting portion which protects the eyes of the wearer from the glare of the sun, and
my device is also provided with a portion adapted to be bent or deflected from the main body of my device in order to protect the neck of the wearer and the back of the head from the rays of the sun.
A further object of my invention is to pro vide a novel device adapted to fit the head of the wearer and adapted to receive advertising data of any desired nature.
WVith the above and other objects in view which will hereinafter appear in the detailed description, my invention consists of a novel construction of a sun vizor, eye shade and advertising device adapted to be supported on the head of the wearer.
It further consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawings one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consist can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrument-alities as herein shown and described.
Figure 1 represents a plan view of a device embodying my invention showing the same in condition to be stored or shipped. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of my device showing the same in use upon the head of a wearer.
Similar numerals of reference indiate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings :1 designates a blank of material which may have any desired contour fro-m which is partially cut the section 2, by means of the lines 3 and a, said section being left uncut, as indicated by the dotted line 5, at which point the blank is preferably weakened or perforated, although this is unnecessary in all cases. The lines 3 and 4c are separated by the portion 6, whereby the section 2 is secured with respect to the vizor portion 7 of my device, the forward edge of which is preferably rounded, as is indicated at 8.
In order to provide a desired amount of flexibility when coming in contact with the forehead of the wearer, I provide T-shaped slots 9, although it will be understood that in the broad scope of my invention the contour or character of the slots 9 is immaterial. Any desired number of these slots may be employed, but I have found in practice that if two are provided on each side of the connection portion 6 a device is produced having the requisite flexibility, so that the same is adapted to fit heads of different dimen- SlO-IlS.
The device is adapted to be shipped in flat condition and may be formed from a blank of material by a single operation, as is evident. When the device is to be used the section 2 is pressed outwardly at its forward end, thereby detaching the same from the vizor portion 7 and permitting said section to be bent outwardly from the body of the blank on the line 5. The device is then placed on the head of the wearer and the vizor portion 7 will extend from under the hat oft-he wearer and serve to protect the eyes from the direct glare of the sun. The section 2, which is outwardly deflected from the body portion, will extend downwardly and protect the neck of the wearer from the direct rays of the sun.
,My device is especially adapted to be employed as an advetrising medium, since both sides thereof if desired may be provided with advertising data and the section 2 which protects the neck and the back of the head of the wearer will cause the advertising material to be displayed in a very conspicuous manner.
My device may be constructed of any desired material such as for example, rubber,
celluloid, fiber, paper, pasteboard and the like, and I do not desire to be limited to any special kind of material.
It will now be apparent that I have vised a novel and useful sun vizor, shade, neck protector and advertising vice which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description, and while I have, in the present instance shown and described a preferred embodiment thereof which has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, a combined eye shade and neck protector, comprising a blank having an opening adapted to fit the head and a section movably connected to said blank and normally located within said opening and adapted to eye debe turned outward to constitute a neck protector.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a combined eye shade and neck protector formed from a single piece'of material having a section partially cut therefrom and adapted to be detached at one point and bent outwardly at an angle to the body of the device.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a combined eye shade and neck protector consisting of a blank formed from a single piece of material and having a section partially cut therefrom adapted to be detached at one side and turned outward at an angle to the body of the blank, and the opening formed by said section communicating with slots extending into the body portion of the blank.
4-. In a device of the character stated, a flat blank of material having a section partially cut therefrom and secured thereto at its front and rear edges and adapted to be detached at its front portion to form a neck protector for the wearer, the forward portion of said blank forming a Vizor and eye shade for the wearer and having T- shaped slots therein communicating with the opening formed by said section.
