team PctentNo. 93,766,:1dted. August 17, 1869.
nvrraovnn FASTBNEB 'ron WHIP-SOCKETS.
' 'I'he Schedule referred to in the" Letters Patent and making part a! the lame.
To all whom it may concern l Be it known that I, O. W. SWIFT, of New Haven,-in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, nave invented certain newand useful Improvements in Whip-Socket Fastener; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is afull,e1ear, and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accom panying-drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a persp ctiveviewof my whipsocket, and
Figure 2, a rear view of the same.
The nature of this invention consists in providing an ordinary whip-socket with a piece of leather, or ,other material, provided with a channel or chamber, into which fits a metal support, secured to the floor of the vehicle, and also in the peculiar mode of tast --cning the socket to said piece, substantially as will be hereinafter set forth.
To enable others to make and employ my inven tion, I will now describe it.
In the accompanying drawings-- A represents the floor of the vehicle, to which is screwed the horizontal-portion of the support, or metal bar B, the vertical portion of said support extending.
upward therefrom a suitable distance.
G'desi'gnates a 'piece of leather, or other material, madeof any desired sire, and provided, at its centre, with a vertical chamber: or channel, 0, which fits down over the metal support B, securing the piece 0 in place thereon.
I) is the whip-socket, which is provided with two:
metal plates, nearits upper and lower ends, said plates being formed with projections, d, placed .at right angles therewith, 'and passing through the piece 0, and then through cross-pieces F F, to which they are fastened, by merely bending their euds down on the cross pieces'or braces F F. (See fig. 2.)
Thus, it will be seen from the foregoing, that the whip-socket, with attachment, can be easily and conveniently removed from the vehicle.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,- is- The socket D, attached by the fastenings F d, constructedas described, to the piece 0, in combination with the-metal support B, all arranged, constructed,
and operated as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
