Description

PATENTED JAN 21 '1868 ffl7 H0/01,5% Z700/y 73606 UNITED STATES PATENT '()EEICEC W. T. HOWELL, OF ALFRED, NEW YORK.
' IMPROVEMENT IN Ptows.-
Specillcation forming part of Letters Patent No. 73,606, dated January 21, 1868.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, W. T. HOWELL, of Alfred, in the county of Allegany and State ot' New York, have invented a new and Improved Plow; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in that class ot' plows which are commonly termed sho\'elplows;7 and it consists in a novel and improved manner of attaching the blade or share to its standard, as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby a very iirm attachment of the same to the standard is obtained, and one which will admit ot the share being very readily applied to and detached from the standard.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure l is a perspective view otl a plow provided with my improvement; Fig. 2,- a detached view ot' a steel point pertaining to the same; Fig. 3, a rear perspective view of the lower part of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the beam ot' a plow, and G C the handles, the lower ends of which are secured to the same by a single bolt, a. D represents the plow-standard, with the upper part ot' which the rear end of the beam is framed. This standard has an inclined position, and its lower part, b, is of cylindrical form, as shown clearly in Fig. 3.
E represents the share, which is made of iron or steel, and if of the latter material the point and share may be made out of one piece. The share has oblique sides o c, with a sharp ridge, d, extending` its whole height, from the lower end or point to the center of the top, which is hollowed out, so as to have quite a recess or depression, e, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. The share has a band, F, attached to its rear side, and this band is tit'tvd on the lower cylindrical part, b, ot' the standard, and rests upon a metal pin, 0*, which is driven into the standard, as shown clearly in Fig. 3. The share is prevented l'rom turning on the standard D by means of a brace-rod, FX, the front end ot' which is hooked in the lower end of a bolt, G, which passes vertically through the beam A, and has its rear end passing through the standard D, the rod Il being in the recess or depression e in the top ofthe share, as shown clearly in Fig. l, and consequentlypreventing the share from turning.
In case cast-iron shares be used, i have a steel point, H, shown in Fig. 2, secured to the lower end of the share, said point being ot' V shape, to conform to the shape ofthe share.
The plow thus consructed is extremely strong and durable, and a broken or worn share may be detached trom the standard and ,a new one applied with the greatest facility.
Having thus described my in rention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The attaching ot' the share Eto its standard D by means ot' the band F, fitted on the cylindrical part b ot' the standard, the pin 0X on which the band rests, and the brave-rod F", fitting in the recess or depression e in the top otl the share, all arranged substantially as g shown and described.
W. T. HOWELL.
