JAMES DANIEL CLEATON, 0F ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
TYPE-WRITER CABINET.
To all lwhom 'tt may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES DANIEL CLEA- ToN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented a newy with means to assist in lifting the typewriter from the compartment, up through the top of the desk and to dispose it over the knee space to be further shifted if desired, to a more central position.
Other objects of the 'invention will appear y in the following complete description.
In this specification I will describe the preferred form of my invention, but it will be understo-od that I do not ylimit myself thereto, as I consider myself entitled to all forms and embodiments of the invention which may be held to fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specilication, in which similar characters or reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my in` vention as applied to a desk; Fig. 2 is a front sectional elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a perspective view looking down at the desk as it is closed, for use as a desk, the typewriter being disposed in the compartment; and Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4L of Fig. 2.
By referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the desk l resembles a desk of the usual type, with drawers or closets at each side of a central knee space. The. top 2 of the desk, over a typewriter rest 3, is removable and itl may be constructed so that it will slide backwardly and be disposed vertically as is shown in Fig. l of the drawings. To the left of the central knee space there is a compartment 4 in which there is a rest 5. The side 6 of the compartment which is nearest the central knee space, extends outwardly and upwardly toward the center of the desk until it reaches the under side of the typewriter rest 3. Near the side 6 are pivoted arms 7 and to these arms 7 is pivoted a shelf 8. A spring 9 is wound on a rod 10, by

which the arms 7 are pivoted and the said rod 10 is secured to the said arms 7. The spring 9 extends toward the shelf S and forms a. loop 11, which is dispo-sed through a thimble l2, secured to the shelf 3. The terminals 13 of the spring 9 extend and lie against t-he bottom 14 of the compartment 4. One half l5 of the typewriter rest 3 is removable, and the shelf 8 is adapted to fill the space occupied by the said removable por` tion l5 of the typewriter rest. The top of the compartment 4 is open and it is provided with a. lid 16 which is hinged to one of the sides of the compartment, this lid 16 having a flanged portion- 17, which is adapted to till the space between the top 1 of the desk and the side of the removable' portion l5 of the typewriter rest, when it is in position. This flanged portion 17 is also adapted to fill the space between the side of the shelf 8 and the top of the desk when the shelf 8 is in the position normally occupied by the removable portion l5 of the typewriter rest. The typewriter rest 5 is constructed of sides and one end and in this typewriter rest the rod 10 is disposed, by which means the arms 7 are pivoted.
In using my invention, when the desk is in the usual form of an oiiice desk, as shown in Fig. 3, and it is desired to use the typewriter, the top of the desk 2 is moved eX posing the typewriter rest 3, after which the lid 1G is raised, exposing the typewriter resting on the shelf 8. The operator then passes his hand down close to the side 6 of and as the shelf with the typewriter thereon ascends, the spring 9 tends to throw the arms 7 with the shelf 8 over the typewriter rest 3, and after the portion 15 of the typewriter rest is removed, the shelf 8 will slide into the space formerly occupied by the removable portion 15 of the typewriter rest. Inasmuch as the typewriter is not secured to the shelf 8, the typewriter, if desired, may be pushed along the typewriter rest to a more central position.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. In a typewriter cabinet, a desk having a lateral compartment which is open at its top, an arm pivoted at one side of the compartment at a distance from its top, and a shelf disposed in the compartment pivoted near its edge at the other side of the compartment to the free terminal of the arm.
2. In a typewriter cabinet, a desk having a lateral compartment which is open at its top, an arm pivoted at one side of the compartment at a distance from its top, a shelf disposed in the compartment pivoted near its edge at the other side of the compartment to the free terminal of the arm, and a removable top member of the desk which is normally disposed substantially beyond the plane of the first named side of the compartment.
3. In a typewriter cabinet, a desk having a compartment which is open at its top, a lid which is adapted for covering the compartment, a removable top member for the desk, an arm pivoted in the compartment, the side of the compartment nearest the re movable top member extending outwardly and upwardly away from the end of the desk and toward the removable member to permit of an extended movement of the piv- I- .oted arm, and a shelf secured to the arm, the
shelf being adapted for itting the space occupied by the removable top member.
4. In a typewriter cabinet, a desk having a compartment which is open at its top, a lid which is adapted for covering the compartment, an arm pivoted in the compartment, the side of the compartment farthest :from the end of the desk extending outwardy and upwardly to permit of an extended movement of the pivoted arm, a rest in the compartment, there being a recess in the rest in which the arm is pivoted, a shelf secured to the arm, and means for rotating the arm.
5. In a typewriter cabinet, a desk having a lateral compartment, which is open at its top, a typewriter rest below the top of the desk, an arm pivoted in the compartment, the side of the compartment farthest from the end of the desk extending outwardly and upwardly toward the typewriter rest, to permit of an extended movement of the pivoted arm, a shelf secured to the arm, means for rotating the arm, and a lid for the compartment, the lid having an inner depending flange which lits the space from the top of the desk to the plane of the typewriter rest.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specilication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
