CASE FOR HYPODERMIC INSTRUMENTS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BLAINE W. Soon, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Nacozari, Sonora, Mexico, have invented a new and Improved Case for Hypodermic Instruments, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to a case particularly adaptable for use in connection with hypodermic instruments. An object of the invention is to provide a convenient case which is simple in construction and in which the instruments are so supported that the same are easily accessible and can be placed above the edge of the case so as to facilitate the extraction of any of the instruments from the case.

WVith the above and other objects in view, the nature of which will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein fully described, illustrated and'claimed.

Referring to the drawings, the case, which is of a size suitable to be placed in a pocket, is formed of two sections, a body section 6 and a cover section 7 which is connected to the rear edge of the body section by a spring hinge 8 extending through the entire rear edge of the two sections. The spring hinge 8 has a tendency to normally throw the case open. This is prevented by a catch 9 provided in the body section 6 and adapted to engage the cover 7 when the same is brought over the body section 6. A push button 10 is provided in the body for actuating the catch 9 to release the cover.

A bed or support 11 having the'configuration of the interior of the body 6 is hinged at suitable intervals by a double hinge 12 to the hinge 8 of the case, therefore, one of the pivots of the doublehinge 12 is in the hinge 8. bed 11 is normally maintained at the bottom of the body section 6 by a yielding tongue 13 which normally tends to snap into a recess 14 provided in the front side of the body section 6. The tongue 13 has a lip 1 whereby the same can be easily disengaged from the recess. The lip facilitates the extraction of the bed from the body section. WVhen a pull is exerted on the tongue 13 the bed will move on the hinge near the edge of the support until the front edge of the bed is out of the body section, when the bed will be free to move on the second pivot which is in the hinge 8 of the case. To prevent the bed from sagging on its hinges when it is out of the body section 6, supporting extensions 16 are provided at the side edges of the bed which have a limited sliding movement on the bed so that they can be brought outwardly and engage the edge of the body section 6 and thereby prevent the bed from moving back into the body section 6 under the weight of the instruxnents carried thereon.

The bed 11 is preferably cut out to reduce its weight, only those parts being retained where supporting means 17 in the shape of yielding clamps for engaging the instruments are necessary. The number and the shape of the supporting means will necessarilyvary with the size of the instruments for which the case is designed, with the number to be carried, and also to suit the personal taste or convenience. The bed 11 has suitable sockets 18 in alinement with some of the supporting means 17 which are,

intended to support hypodermic needles, these sockets forming protectors for the needle ends. The bed 11 with the supporting means thereon constitute a rack which is connected by double hinges to the hinge of the case. This rack can be maintained above the edge of the section which accommodates it by means of the members 16, which can be moved outwardly of the rack when said rack is above the section accommodating It will be noted that the entire rack is thrown above the section accommodating it, so that any of the instruments located thereon can be easily and quickly placed on or removed from the rack.

A bed or support 19 is provided within the cover section 7:. It is maintained substantially midway between the bottom and the edge of said section by a double hinge 20, which is secured to the hinge 8, and a yielding tongue 21 which snaps into a recess 22 provided in the front of the cover section 7 The bed 19 extends through only a fraction of the covers length but through its entire width. It has supporting means 23 on the upper and lower faces. The supporting means is formed of clips with lugs 19 at the base to lock the base of the clip on the opposite face of the bed. It is therefore adapted to carry instruments or accessories on both faces. Instruments or accessories located on the upper face of the bed 19 when the case is in the open position are easily accessible without any displacement of the bed, but if desired the tongue 22 may be disen gaged from its recess by pressure on the lip 24, which forms an integral part of the tongue, and pulling on said lip, whereby said bed can be placed on the edge of the cover section 7. To remove instruments or accessories located on the under side of the bed'19, said bed is moved on its hinge so as to turn the same over on to the body section 6, as shown in Fig. 3, thereby making the instruments or accessories located on the underside easily accessible. This bed is cut away between the securing means and, with the same constitutes a rack, which is secured by a double hinge so as to be supported normally midway between the top and the edge of the cover section 7, and which can be moved so as to rest on the edge of the cover section or turned over.

The cover section 7 carries another bed or rack which is secured at the rear edge by a double hinge 26 to the hinge 8 so as to swing in and out of the case in a manner similar to the rack 11. Said rack 25 occupies the remaining space of said cover section unoccupied by the rack 19. The double hinge 26 is of a character similar to the double hinge 12 to normally maintain said rack near the top of the cover section 7. It has a flange 27 at the front thereof for snapping into the front wall of the cover section and locking said rack therein. It has suitable securing means 28 provided thereon for retaining the instruments oryaccessories which are to go with the case. It is cut out between the securing means to lighten it. The rack 19 has a flange 29 at the edge in proximity of the rack 25, so as to prevent instruments or accessories carried by the supporting means 23 on said rack from protruding into the path of the rack 25.,

While I have described the principle of operation, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are within the scope of the appended claims.

I claim: 7

1. A case of the class described comprising two hinged sections, a rack, a double hinge securing the rack to the hinge of the sections so as to normally maintain said rack at the bottom of one of the sections, and movable members adapted to extend from the sides of the rack for engaging said edges of the section whereby said rack may be maintained above the edges of the section substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. A case of the class described comprising a pair of hinged sections, a rack, a double hinge securing the rack to the hinge of the sections so as tomaintain said rack normally between the bottom and the edges of one of said sections, and means for locking the rack in normal position to said section, said rack having supporting means for instruments or accessories on both faces thereof; said rack adapted to be swung on its'hinge by means of said locking means whereby the lower face thereof may be exposed substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. A case of the class described comprising two hinged sections, a pair of racks in one of said sections, a double hinge securing one of said racks to the hinge of the sections so that normally said rack is in proximity of the bottom of said section, means for locking said rack to the section in normal position, a double hinge securing the other of said racks to the hinge of the sections to maintain said rack normally midway between the bottom and the edge of said section, means for locking the rack in the normal position to the section, and supporting means on both faces of said rack, said locking means of the two racks facilitating the manipulation of each rack on its double hinge substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. A case of the class described comprising two hinged sections, a pair of racks in one of said sections, a double hinge securing one of said racks to the hinge of the sections to normally maintain said rack in proximity of the bottom of said section, yielding means for locking said rack to the section in normal position, a double hinge securing the other of said racks to the hinge of the sections to maintain said rack normally midway between the bottom and the edge of said section, yielding means for locking the rack in the normal position, supporting means on both faces ofsaid rack, and a flange on said rack in proximity of the first mentioned rack to prevent interference between the means carried on said racks and whereby any of the racks may be moved independently of the other without interfer' ence, and means for facilitating the manipulation of said racks.

5. A case of the class described comprising two hinged sections, one constituting the body section and the other the cover section, a rack in the body section, a double hinge securing said rack to the hinge of the sections and normally maintaining the rack at the bottom of the body section, movable members at the side edges of said rack adapted to move outwardly when the rack is out of the body section, whereby said movable members will engage the edge of the body section and prevent the rack from moving into the body section, a rack in the cover section, a double hinge securing the rack to the hinge of the sections to maintain said second rack normally between the top and the edges of said cover section, and means for locking the rack in normal position tosaid cover section, said rack having supporting means on both faces thereof; said rack in the cover section adapted to be swung on its double hinge to rest on the body section.

6. A case of the class described comprising two hinged sections, one forming the body section and the other the cover section, a rack in the body section, a double hinge securing the rack to the hinge of the sections to normally maintain said rack at the bottom of the body section, sliding members at the side edges of the rack adapted to move outwardly when the rack is out of the body section to engage the edges of said body section and prevent the rack from moving into the said body section on its hinge, a pair of racks in said cover section, a double hinge securing one of saidracks tothe hinge of the sections to normally maintain said rack in proximity of the top of said cover section, yielding means for locking said rack to the cover section in normal position, a double hinge securing the other rack in the cover section to the hinge of the sections so as to maintain said other rack normally midway between the cover and the edge of the cover section, yielding means for locking said second rack in the cover section to the cover section, said second rack having supporting means on both faces of said rack, and means associated with all of the locking means of the racks for facilitating the manipulation thereof and of the racks.

7. A case of the class described comprising a pair of hinged sections, a rack, adouble hinge securing the rack to the hinge of the sections so as to maintain said rac normally between the bottom and the edges of one of said sections, means for locking the rack in normal position to said sections, and U-shaped clips on both faces of said rack, said clips having lugs at the bottom of the U for engaging the clips disposed on the opposite face of the rack.
