Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 16, 1917.
Application filed March 26, 1915. Serial No. 17,114.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD Bnooxs, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New. York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing- Cabinets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
The invention relates to articles of furniture such as sewing cabinets or tables, and has for its object the provision of a structure that can be manufactured readily and economically, and with eiiicient results in the carrying out of the operative purpose of the device. A further object of the invention is to construct and combine the several parts in such a manner as to afford a maximum capacity for the various articles to be contained in the cabinet, making them readily accessible, and completely protecting them when not in use. To these and other ends the invention resides in certain improvements and combinations of parts, all
as will be hereinafter more fully described,
the novel features being pointed out in the claim at the end of the specification.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a preferred embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of one portion with the spool case in open position, and
Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the closed position of the spool case in dotted lines.
Similar reference numerals in the several figures indicate the same parts.
In the embodiment of the invention, as herein shown and described, 1 designates the body portion mounted on legs 2 and provided with the drawers 8, which are movable horizontally and may be employed in the manner common to this class of furniture. The body portion is provided with a top or cover 4, which is preferably integral, and attached to the body portion in any suitable manner. The top 4 projects beyond the sides of the body portion, forming extensions which serve to cover the adjustable cases or drawers attached at the sides of the device, when they are in normal position, as will now be described.
6 designates a drawer or case, open at the top, as shown at 7, and hinged at one side of the body portion so as to swing about a vertical axis from the position shown in Fig. 3 in dotted lines to that shown in Fig. 2.. At the opposite side of the body portion, I provide another adjustable case or drawer, preferably in the form of a spool cabinet embodying a top 8, shelves 9 and a bottom 10, and movable bodily from the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3to that shown in full lines in order to permit access to its interior. To this end, I employ a holder preferably of substantial U-shape, as shown, having a central part 11 that is rotatively mounted in suitable bearings 12 on the body portion. The holder also embodies a pair of horizontally extending arms 13 with upstanding portions 14: which engage corresponding openings formed in the top and bottom of the cabinet, as shown in Fig. 2. In moving the spool cabinet from its closed to its open position, the handle 15 is grasped and a forward pull is exerted, causing the cabinet to move bodily, swinging outwardly and forwardly, due to its combined movement withthe holder, which rotates about its vertical axis. When the cabinet is in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3, its entire interior is easily accessible, and further forward movement-of the inner end of the cabinet is prevented by its engagement with the upper arm 13, as shown in Fig. 2.
It will be seen that when the pivoted cases 7 and 8 are closed, they are both housed under the cover 4 which serves to protect the contents and to afford a compact arrangement when they are not in use.
I claim as my invention:
A sewing cabinet consisting of a central body portion, an integral top secured to the body portion and extending beyond the same, a wire holder including a vertical portion rotatively attached at one end of the body portion, arms extending laterally from the top and bottom of said vertical portion and terminating in free upturned of the case in alinement with the front of emitsi9 22nd a swinging; casedhzfwing iits tog the body portion. 311C 0 0m 101111121 6 0n S311 ree up 111'116 ends of the holder and movable With the EDWARD BROOKS 5 holder to a position underneath said top and Witnesses:
