GEORGE F. GOULLEE, OF WELLSVILLE, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND THOMAS K. SHELBY, OF WELLSVILLE, MISSOURI.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 20, 1909.
lApplication filed May 7, 1908. Serial No. 431,458.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F, GOULLEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wellsville, in the county of Montgomery and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Photographic Chair, of which the following is a specification. 7
This invention has reference to improvements in posing chairs for photographers, and is designedmore particularly to provide a chair for the posing of children and especially very young children preparatory to and during the operation of taking their` photographs. l
The invention comprises essentially a stand or support upon which is mounted a stem carrying a verticallyadjustable seat, and at the upper end of the stem there is provided a clamp esigned to encircle the body of the child so as to su 1port the child upon the seat to prevent its fal lng therefrom. The clamp is so constructed as to firmly hold the child and at the same timemay be. concealed in the clothing or drapery of the child while the latter is seated upon the seat. i The clamp com-` prises two curved members or arms slidable to and from each other and designed to encircle the body of the child, below the arms or at the waist line. The clamp structure is so arranged that the arms are readily clamped in place or they may be readily loosened for adjustment. The body of the clamp is so dis osed as to be hidden by the body of the chi d and so will not become visiblein the photograph. d
The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed. description taken in connection with vthe accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which drawings,
Figure 1, is a perspective view of the posing chair. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section through the clamp with parts shown in elevation, and Fig. 3 1s a perspective viewof the clamp with the arts separated'.
Referring to t e drawings there is shown a stand 1 supported upon legs 2, and rising centrally from this stand isa post or stem 3. This stem 3 may be a solid rod or itmay be made hollow for lightness and its upper end is ex anded laterally into Va head l of substantia ly triangular shape and at appropriate points through this head are passages 5.
Secured to the headi by screws 6, one only of which is shown, is a front plate 7, having a downwardly extending portion 8, conforming in sha e to the general shape of the head 4. It is t irough this downwardly extending portion 8 that the screws 6 pass. The front plate 7 above the extension 8 is provided with a passage 9 about midway of its length and also with end passages 10, these passages being counter-sunk at their outer ends for the reception of screws such as the screws 6.
Back of the plate 7 is a block 11 made fast to said plate by the screws passing through the holes 10, and midway of the block is a perforation 12 matching the perforation 9 in the plate 7. Rising from one edge of the block 11 is a flange 13 having two longitudinal slots 14 and 15 parallel one to the other and extending in the direction of the length of the block 11, which is also the direction of the length of the plate 7. The flange 13 is of such thickness that when the block 1l is attached to the plate 7, then there is a space between the corresponding face of the flange 18 and the rear face of the plate 7 for a purpose which will presently appear. To the rear of the block 11 is another plate 16, which may be termed a back plate, and this plate l'corresponds in size and shape to the plate 7 and is also provided with a downwardly rojecting portion 17 through which is a singile perforation 18. Furthermore the plate 16 is provided with a central perforation 19 matching the perforation 9 in the front plate and the perforation 12 in Athe block 11.
In addition to the parts so far described there areprovided two curved arms 20 and 21, each terminating at one end in a straight extension 22 on which is formed a tongue 23. The straight portions 22 of the arms are confined between the iiangeV 1.3 of the block 11 and the front 7 with the tongue 23 entering the respective slots 14 and 15. It is desirable that the arms 2O and 21 be of the same horizontal plane but in order that the extensions 22 may pass each other these extensions are arranged in different horizontal planes. For this reason one of the arms, say the arm 21, is connected to the extension 22 by a short angle part 24 of such length that when the corresponding tongue v23 is in the slot 15 with the tongue 23 of the other arm in the slotlll, the two arms 20 and 21 are in the same horizontal plane. By this construction the arms may be caused to approach each other as close as necessary or be separated as far as desired without the exten j sions 22 interfering one with the other when they move in different horizontal planes.
r1`he back plate 16 is held to the post 3by the lowermost screw 6, so that the upper portion of the plate is free to move to a lim ited extent, to and from the flange 13 of the l `rear faces of the tongues 23, which latter are made Wide enough to extend through the ange 13 and when the thumb nut 25 is screwed on to the screw 241 with sutlicient force then the plate 16, engaging the tongues 23 will force the extensions 22 of the arms 2O and 21 against the front plate 7 and so clamp these arms in any adjusted position desired. On loosening the thumb nut 25 the arms 21 are relieved from the clamping action of the plate 16 which will spring slightly outwardly, then the arms may be adjusted together or separated as the case may be, after which they may be again clamped in the adjusted position. i
Mounted on the stem 3 is a sleeve 26 fastened to which is a bracket 27 carrying a sea 28 which may be fastened to the bracket by suitable bolts 29 or otherwise. The sleeve 26 is held in any position of adjustment on the stem 3 b y a suitable set screw 30.
In using the posing chair the seat 28 is adjusted to a suitable height to bring the arms 20 and 21 under the arms of the child Whose picture is to be taken or these arms may be arranged to embrace the waist of the child when resting upon the seat 28. Before the child is placed upon the seat 2S the arms 20 and 21 may be spread sufficiently far apart to permit the body of the child to be inserted between their contiguous ends. Then these arms are brought together until they closely embrace the body of the child after which the arms may be locked in the adjusted position by a suitable manipulation' of the thumb nut 25. The arms 20 and 21 will hold the body of the child firmly in position without danger of the child slipping off of the seat 28, and the arms 2O and 21 may be concealed by the clothing of the child or by suitable drapery so as not to show in the picture.
In the practical embodiment of the invention, the parts will be suitably ornam'ented. For instance, the arms 2O and 21 may be finished in any desired manner for ern amental purposes and the seat 28 may be furnished with cushions or drapery of any desired orna mental pattern.
By making the arms 2() and 21 slide toward or from each other they are caused to grasp the body of the child in the most advantageous manner without danger or hurting or pinching the child. -At the same timelargc clamping surfaces are provided so that the frictional engagement of the clamping surfaces with the arms is so extensive that but little force is required to be applied to the thumb nut 25 to iirmly clamp the arms 2O and 21 in the adjusted position so that movement of the child will not disturb the adustment of the arms when once made.
What is claimed is:
