The present invention relates to a table attachment forchairs, which embodies novel features oi: construction whereby it can be readily used in connection with any chair and will provide a very convenient rest for supporting magazines, books or the like in front of the yoccupant of the chair.

Further objects of the invention are to provide a device of this character which is "comparatively simple and inexpensivei in its Construction, which can be readily placed in position upon the chair7 which can be readily adjusted to iit different chairs and support the table in different positions, and which can be folded into a small amount of space when not in use.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated on all of the views of the drawings by like reference characters.

The base of the device is in the term of a 'trame which is adapted to rest upon the seat of a chair and comprises the two side bars 1 which are pivotally connected at their rear ends `by the links 2. These llinks are pivotall'y connected to each other and to the side'bars 1 and can be adjusted to admit of the side bars being held the desired distance apart. VlWhen the device is in position the side bars extend along` opposite sides of the chair seat, and the forward ends of the side bars are provided with uprights or standards 3. preferably extensible so that the length thercot can be varied and in the present .instance each of the uprights comprises a lower section 3*? and an upper section 3. The ends ot these sections overlap each other and have a pin and slot lconnection 4 so that they are maintained in alignment With. each other, although the upper section can be moved up and down to adjust the height of the upright. A set screw 5 is provided for clamping the two sections 3a and 3b 4et the upright in an adjusted position.

The upper ends of the uprights are connected by a transverse bar 6 upon which the table I is mounted. The bar 6 is extensible7 being formed in sections which overlap and have a pin and `slot connection 6a, whereby the two sections areheld in alignment with each other although they can be moved in and out to lengthen or shorten the bar. The extremities of the transverse bar 6 are extended downwardly at 6b and provided with bolts 8 which are adapted tobe received in notches or slots 9 in the upper ends of the uprights 3. Thumb nuts 8 are threaded upon the bolts 8, and it will be obvious: that when these thumb nuts are tightened the cross bar-can be securely fastened to the upper ends of the uprights 3, although when the thumb nuts are loosened the cross bar and table can be readily lifted out of position.

The table 7 may be formed ot any suitable material, although in the present instance it is constructed of sheet metal and provided at the sides thereof with depending flanges l() which are formed with openings 11 to receive the bar 6. The bar is preferably flat in formation so thatit cooperatesk with the openiiigs ll to hold the table in a yfixed position upon the bar, although the bar and table can be tilted into` any desired angular position when the 'thu-mb nuts 8L1 are loosened.

The table is shown as comprising end strips 71' and a plurality ot intern'iediatek strips 7b which may or may not be spaced from the end strips and from each other, as may be desired. At the upper and lower wlges'of the table the strips 7 and 7b are connected by cross pieces l2 which have' the I ends thereof turned downwardly at 12a. The strips 7 and 7L are secured to the cross pieces l2 by ysmall bolts 13 or similar faster ing members which are preferably detachable so that the table can be taken apart and packed in a small amount of space tor shipment or storage.

lVhen using the device the base which comprises the side bars l and links 2 is placed upon the seat ot a chair and the side bars l adjusted the desired distance apart. rll`he uprights 3 can then be properly ai ranged and clamped in an erect position by means ot the set screws la which are pro vided at the pivotal connection between the lower ends ot the uprights and the side bars. The length oit the uprights can be adjusted to bring the table the desired height in front of the occupant of the chair. After the occupant has seated himself in the chair the bolts 8 at the ends of the cross bars 6 are brought into position in the slots 9 at the upper ends of the uprights and the thumb nuts 8L then tightened while the table is held at the desired angular position. The table then provides a convenient support `for magazines, newspapers or the like, and the device is held firmly in position by reason of the tact that the occupant ot thc chair is seated upon the links 2. lts/*hen the occupant wishes to get out of the chair the thumb nuts 8L are loosened so that the table can be easily lifted out ot position.

The device can be easily adjusted to lit di tl'erent sizes of chairs and the table can be held at the elevation and angle which may be particularly desired by the occupant ot the chair. When the device is not in use it can be collapsed and packed in a small amount ot space.

The intermediate strips 7b of the table may be formed at their adjacent edges with a series ot corresponding notches l5 and any selected pair of these notches is adapted to be engaged by the arms of a Lil-shaped clip 16 which may be formed ot spring wire. T he arms o' the clip can be flexed inwardly toward each other to disengage them trom the notches preparatory to removing the clip from the table or shitting it into engagement with another pair ot the notches. The arms oit the clip terminate in laterally extended portions 16a Which engage the bottom ot the table when the clip is in position7 the clip itself projecting through the opening so that it will form a rest tor a book or magazine when the table is tilted into an inclined position.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is,

A device of the character described, including spaced side bars adapted to rest loosely upon a chair seat, pivoted links connect-ing the side bars adjacent their tree ends so that they can be moved toward and away from each other, said links titting llat against the chair seat and being adapted to receive the weight of the occupant ot the Lesser? chair, a table, and means upon the side bars for detachably supporting the table.

A device of the character described,` including side bars adapted to be arranged upon opposite sides ot the occupant ot a chair1 adjustable means connecting` the side bars and extending across the chair seat and ltting tlat thereon so as to receive the weight of the occupant ot the chair, uprights carried by the side bars and comprising vertically adjustable members, and a table supported by the uprights Vl'or rotative adjust nient thereon. i

3. A device ot the character described, comprising side bars adapted to rest upon a chair seat, link members pivotally connecting the side bars so that the latter can be moved toward and away trom each other, said link members extending across the chair seat so as to receive the weight ot the occupant ot the chair, uprights pivotally connected to the side bars, means for clamping the uprights in adjusted position, and a table detachably carried by the uprights.

A device of the character described, comprising side bars adapted to rest loosely upon a chair seat, links adjustably connecting the side bars and extending across the chair seat so as to receive the weight ott the occupant of the chair, uprights projecting` from the side bars and adjustable thereon toward and l'rom the seat, a cross bar connecting the uprights and pivotally connected thereto, and a table carried by the cross bar and adapted to be swung by movements thereot into ditl'erent angular positions.

A device of the character described, comprising side bars adapted to rest loosely upon a chair seat, links adjustably connecting the side bars, said links extending across the chair seat so as to receive the weight olf the occupantof the chair, uprights projecting from the side bars and having slotted ends, a cross bar connecting the uprights, clamping bolts carried by the ends or' the cross bar and received reniovably within the slots of the uprights, and va table mounted upon the cross bar.

6. A device ot the character described, comprising a. supporting 'trame adapted to rest loosely on a chair seat and having portions adapted to receive the weight ot tbe occupant ot' the chair, spaced uprights projecting therefrom, a cross bar connectingthe uprights and having a detachable connection therewith ttor rotative adjustment, and a table supported on the cross bar and having slotted Vlianges through which the cross bar passes to interlock therewith to hold the table in position thereon.

8. A device oi the character described, in-

oluding a` pair of side bars adapted to be arranged upon opposite sides of the occupent of a chair, means connecting the side bars adjacent their free ends and extending across the chair seatso as to receive the Weight of the occupant of the chair, uprights pivotally connected to the side bars, means for holding at said pivots the uprights in an adjusted position, `and zi table supported by the upriglits for rotative adjustment thereon.
