Application filed July 12, 1911. Serial- No. 638.189.
State of Illinois. have in-.ented certain new" and useful Improvements in Convertible Supportsfor Books, &e., of which the followingis a specification.
The present invention embodies on improved support ada ted for special adjustment, and to be cul npsed, and is designed particularly for use in holding a book convenient for reading by a person confined to a had or sitting in a chair. The book supporting means employed is of such construetion a to permit of ready collapsing when it is not desired To use the device, and furthermore the mrts are o adjusted that the support may It! converted into a. table for use n other ways than that above referred to.
For a full understanding of the )IQSGIN. imention, reference is'to he had to tie following description and to the aecompanying drawings, in \\'lllCll-'''' Figure l is a perspt-etive view of the in- \rnlion with the parts adjusted for use as a hook support; Fig. 2 is'a vertical sectional \it-w, (\l'tlllll parts omitted and others shown in elevation; lrig. It is a front elevation of the lamh' supporting member and the horimnhzl supporting bar on which it is mountwl. the latter heino shown partly in seiatiou; I-ig. is a \'lt'\\ :lmwmg the book support lnllillhl'tlq Fig. 7. is a st'i'linlltll view taken appr-nimately on tlu line ol' Fig. l.
'l m nglunlt the Following detail description nation the t-Hlill ligures of the drawmgs. similar parts are referred to hyllke rrl't-rt-tn-e ehurarters.
Hpt-e'ilieally de cribing the invention and the adulnlageous' operation and uses thereof. denotes a pair of hollow standards having suitable supporting lrgIs' ii at their l||\\t'l ends and receiving at their upper ends,
the adjustable set-lions U, the. latter comprising vertical portions movable in the hollow portions of the standards A, said parts having' registering openings in hit-h pins are adapted to he received to hold the parts at desired vertical adjustments. 'lhe seciltlim (I of the tandards A have lateral arms at. their upper ends. which are adapted to lu: received in the hollow portion of the horizontal bar I). S t srreu's l are oarried y the member l) and permit of adjustment of the sections C to vary oi the members A and C towtird and from one anopier, as well asafl'ording a means permitti 1g rotation of the bar E on the arms the inclination of the book support F. 'lhe book support F comprises a base late 2, a supporting plate 3, and the side p ates 4. Projecting downwardly from the base plate 2 is o. post/or stud 5 which is mounted in a tubular bearing 6' rojectin upwardly from thehorizontnl or E. he parts 5 and 6 permit of rotntive movement of the book rest F in an obvious manner with respect to the main support carrying said book rest. The side plates 4 are provided with a series of notches 4' at intervals along .their front ed o portions and a transverse adjustin an locking rod 7 is adaptedto be engnget in correslmnding notches 4' to hold the book supporting plate 3 at a-suitable inclination as esired. The plate 3 has a. suitable rest flange 3' at its lower edge and the locking rod 7 is formed at its opposite extremities with heads adapted to engage with the outer faces of the sides 4 to prevent accidental displacement ol the latter from operative positionsin respect to the-supporting plate 3. The side plates 4 are hinged at their lower edges, nsshown at 8 to the base plate 2 whereby the side plates may be lowered into positions resting upon one another, as shown in Fig. 4, and the plates 3 also move dowmvardly so as to rest upon the uppermost side plate in eollapsing the hook rest to place the some out of use or for utilizing the plate 3 as a sort of table. The plate it is pivoted at its lower front edge portion to 'eal's ll at opposite sides of the lmse plate .3 and the side )late. 3 has a :qo'ing'rateh It) uojeeting' ltllll its rear side to engage wit 1 the rear edge of the plate J to hold the members 3 and -l in collapsed positions.
tinder some conditions, in order to obtain a larger tahle surl'at'e, it nmy he desired to adjust the side plates i so that they projeet. outwardly from the base plate 2, as shown in dottet "lines in Fig. 3, \vlmreupon the plates 4 will be supported on the lugs 11 and thus maintained in horizontal positioos.
The standards A maybe moved toward or from one another and properly adjusted nerordint: to the width of a bed or chair adjurent. to which the devioo may be positioned aml the hook rest may of course he raised or lowered to a desired adjustment by rea lit , plate. a
son of the mounting of the sections C on the standards A.
The invention is very simple in its construction and the adjusting means em loyed are susceptible of ready manipulation to accomplish the desired results.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
Loin an adjustable support of the class described, the combination of a book rest mmprisin' a base plate, side plates, a sup porting pate, means adjustab e on the side plates for holding the supporting plate at a predetermined adjustment, connect-ions between the side and supporting plates and the base plate permitting the former to be collapsed so as to rest upon the base plate, and a nain support for t 1e book rest aforesaid.
2. Iii-an adjustable support of the class described, a booknest consisting of a base plate, side plates pivota'll connected with the base plate; and inova le into sitions mating on the base plate or exten ing outwardly therefrom in substantiallhorizontal positions for use as table members, :1 Sup pouting plate movably mounted on the base .pialie, and means normally holding the side plates in vertical positions and at the same time holding the supporting plateat a desired adjustmmita k 3. In an adj-ixstable support of the class described a book rest consisting of a base book supporting plate pivoted to the front portion of the base plate and adapted to fold downwardl thereon, side plates pivoted-to the side edge portions of the base a late and also adapted to fold dmvmva-rdy thereon, and means adjustable on the side plates for holding the book sup porting plate in a predetermined osition.
4. In an adjustable support 0 the class described, a book rest consisting of a base plate, abooksupporti-ng plate pivoted to the front ortion of the base plate and adapted to fol downwardly thereon, side l'ates pivoted to the side edge portions 0 the base plate and also adapted to fold downwardly thereon, and means adjustable on the side plates for holding the book supporting plate in a predetermined position, an means projectin" from the base plate for supporting the si e plates in horizontal positions for use as table members. l
5. In an adjustable support of the class described, a book rest comprising a supporting member, a base plate mounted thereon, a boolr supporting plate pivoted to the front edge portion of the base plate, side plates hinge at their lower edges to the side edge portions of the base plate and adapted to fold downwardly upon the latter, a catch carried b v the book supporting plate to engage the base plate to hold the book supporting plate in collapsed position over the downwardly folded side lattes, said, plates being provided with a series of notches, and a locking rod adapted to be seatedin corresponding notches of the. side plates, and to hold the book supporting plate in adjusted positions.
6. In an adjustable support of the class described, a book rest comprising a sup porting member, a base plate mounted thereon, a book supporting plate pivoted to the front edge portion of the base plate, side plates hinged at their lower edges to the side edge portions of the base plate and ada ptedto fold downwardly upon the latter, a catch carried by the book su porting late to engage the base plate to liold the Ooh supporting plate in collapsed position over the downwardly folded side plates, said plates being provided with a series of notches, and a locking rod adapted to be sealed in corresponding notches of the side plates and to hold the book supporting plate in adjusted positions, and heads at opposite ends of the locking rod preventing aocidental outward movement of the side plates,
the base late having lugs extending from its opposite side edges to form supporting member's for the side plates when the latter are moved outwardly into substantially horizontal positions.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
