WILHELM SCHLEUNING, OF FREIHllNG-OBERPFALZ, GERMANY.
TABLE DEVICE FOR SlCK- BEDS,.8 6C.
SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 725,593, dated April 14, 1903.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILHELM SOHLEUNING, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Freihung-Oberpfalz, Bavaria, Germany, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Table Devices forSick-Beds, &c., of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object an independent removable table device for sick-beds and like furniture intended for resting purposes, in which the table-plate is mounted on two swinging adjustable U-shaped frames pivoted to a bed-frame.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 3 show the invention in the position for use, and Figs. 2 and 4 in aposition of repo'sefor instance, attached to an iron bedstead or to a couch or chair. Figs. 5 311(1'6. show the arrangement of the table construction on a wooden bedstead, shown in Figs. 7 and 8.
As may be seen from the drawings, the
table is mounted on two adjustable U-shape;d frames 1) and a, being hinged to the crosspiece of the frame I) and resting on the cross piece of the frame 0. The U-shaped frames 1) and c are pivoted and are freely movable forward and backward on their points of rotation d and e. v A
The table and U-shaped frames may be held in adjusted position by various'devices for instance, by a cross-rod or strut f, connected with one arm by a slide-piece g, which is capable of being fixed in any given position, said strut f being connected with the pivot E of the arm C, so that by adjusting the slide-piece g the table may be adjusted to any given position.
In order to enable the table to be fixed in any desired inclined positi0n--for instance, for reading-either the whole table a or only a portion thereof-for instance, in the pres ent case themiddle piece 71-may be made capable of being suitably folded up and fixed by suitable devices, so that it may be brought when reading into any desired position according to requirements, and finally into the completely-folded-up position, as shown by dotted lines at 2'. j
with: details Where wooden bedsteads are used, the table construction may be arranged as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, for instance. Here a standard or upright K is provided at each side of the bedstead and adapted to receive the pivots of the arms I) and c, which carry the table-plate a.; These uprights K are provided with sleeves Z, which move freely upward and downward, while a projection n may be pressed firmlyunder the bedstead by tightening up a wing-nut on a thread on the standards, so that thestandards K are immovably clamped on both sides of the bed.
Finally, a cross-bar 0 is arranged on the sleeve Z, which carries at each enda pivot 19 and g, respectively, for the arms I) and c.
It will be evident without further explanation that this device maybe easily attached or removed from any bed. by a suitable tightening up or loosening 'of the wingnut m, so that the table construction forms a completely independent attachment.
The chief value of the present invention consists in that the table a always moves in a horizontal position, so that when adjusting the position the articles placed thereon need not be first removed.
I claim- 1. The combination with a bed, or couch, of parallel, adjustable U -shaped frames, pivotally connected at their lower ends to the sides of the bed; a cross-arm or strut connecting the adjacent sides of the U-shaped frames, and pivotally connected at one end to the lower end on each side of one of said U-shaped frames, and pivotally connected at its other end to a locking-sleeve, slidable on the side of the other U-shaped frame; and a table mounted on the top of the U- shaped frames, and hinged to one, and resting loosely on the other, as and for the purpose set forth. v
2. The combination with abed-frame, of two parallel, adjustable U-shaped frames, having their lower ends pivoted to the sides of the bed-frame; a cross-arm, or strut, connecting the sides of the U-shaped frames, and pivotally connected at one end to the pivotal connection of the side of one of the U-shaped frames at its lower end, and piving the entire table, or its leaf in adjusted, otally connected at its other end to a lockinginclined position, as herein set forth. 1o sleeve, slidable on one of the sides of the i In testimony whereofI affix my signature other U-shaped frame; and a table hinged in presence of two Witnesses.
