UNITED STATES PATENT much,
JOHN SIGURDSON, OF GLENBORO, CANADA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T0 ARNI TH LONG, OF SAME PLACE. V
BEDSTEAD, TABLE, SOFA, on CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 597,071, dated January 11, 1898.
Application filed June 8, 1897. $erial No. 639,798 (No model.)
T0 ctZZ whom it ntcty concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN SIGURDSON, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Glenboro, in the municipality of South Cypress and Province of Manitoba, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads, Tables, Sofas, or Chairs, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to bedsteads, tables, sofas, and chairs; and the object thereof is to provide an improved article of furniture which may be used either as a bedstead, table, sofa, or chair, and when used as a chair or sofa may also operate as a rocker or remain stationary, as desired.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my improvement when used as a bedstead; Fig. 2, an end view thereof; Fig. 3, a side view of the device when used as a table; Fig. 4, an end view of the device when used as a rocker, chair, or sofa; Fig. 5, a plan view of two spring-arms and their connections, which form a part of the device; and Fig. 6, a side view thereof.
In the practice of my invention I provide two parallel base bars or supports 7, which are similar to the base bars or supports of a" base-rocker, and these bars or supports are provided with casters or rollers S, and mounted centrally of each is a rocker 9, and the base bars or supports are provided with springs 10, which are adapted to bear on the under sides of said rockers near the ends thereof, and pivotally mounted in longitudinal slots or chambers 11, formed in the upper sides of said base bars or supports, are blocks 12, which are adapted to be raised into the position shown in Fig. 2, in which position theyoperate in connection with the lower sides of the rockers 9 and hold said rockers stationary.
Each of the rockers 9 is provided with a vertical frame 13, which is mounted thereon or secured thereto and which consists of a central hub let, with which is connected a downwardly-directed rod 15, which is connected centrally with the rocker 9, and downwardly and outwardly inclined rods 16, which are also connected with the rocker 9, and outwardly and downwardly curved rods 17, which are also connected with the rocker 9, near the ends thereof, and the hub 14: is provided with a vertical upwardly-directed rod 18 and upwardly and outwardly inclined rods 19 and outwardly and upwardly curved rods 20, and the upper ends of they rods 18,19, and 20 are connected by horizontal cross-bars 21. The hub 14 is also provided at each side thereof with outwardly-directed tubular arms 2, which are adapted to receive rods 23, which are provided at their outer ends with rings 24, and the ends of the tubular arms 22 are connected by a downwardly-curved rod 25, which is also connected with each of the rods 15, 16, and 17 and the outer ends of the said tubular arms 22 are also connected by a curved rod 26, which is also connected with the rods 18, 19, and 20, and the central portion of the rod 26 is inclined upwardly where it connects with the rod 18, and formed at the point where the rod 26 connects with the rods 18, 19, and 20 are hubs or rings27.
The end frames, which are mounted on the rockers 9, and the base bars or supports 7 are connected by a central rod composed of two tubular sections 28, on the outer ends of which are mounted nuts 29, and said tubular sections 28 are provided on the inner sides of said end frames with nuts 30, and mounted in said tubular sections 28 is a rod 31, and by means of this construction the central rod, consisting of the tubular sections 28 and the rod 31, mounted therein, constitutes a telescopic connection for the end frames, and said end frames are thus made longitudinally adjustable. I also provide side rods, which consist of two tubular sections 32, in which are mounted a rod 33,.and in practice when it is desired to use the device as a bedstead the outer ends of the side rods, or the tubular sections 32 thereof, are passed through the rings or heads 2% of the rod 23, which enter the tubular arms 22. The side rods are connected with the central rod by combination spring-arms 34, any desired number of which may be employed, and these spring-arms 34 are of the form in cross-section shown in Figs. 5 and 6, and each consists of an inner section 35, which is revolubly connected with the central rod of the frame, and an outer section 36, which is adjustable on the inner section and through the outer ends of which the side rods are passed. As shown in the drawings, the inner sections of these arms 34 are provided with longitudinal slots 37 and the inner ends of the outer sections with cross-heads 38, which move therein and the ends of which overlap the sides of one part of the inner section, and the outer ends of the outer section pass through the outer ends of the inner section, and the inner sections are revolubly mounted on the central rod of the frame, and the side rods are revolubly mounted in the outer ends of the outer sections of said arms, and by means of this construction the arms by which the central rod and the side rods are connected are longitudinally adjustable, and said side rods may be extended outwardly when in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, so as to increase the width of the bedstead, as will be readily understood.
Vt henever it is desired to use the device as a table, the ends of the side rods are disconnected from the outer ends of the rods 23, which are mounted in the tubular rods 22, this result being accomplished by sliding the tubular sections 32 of the side rods inwardly, and said side rods may be then raised and connected with either one of the tubular hubs or rings 27, this position of the parts being shown in Fig. 3, and I also provide a table 40, which consists of two separate parts, which are adapted to be connected with the top bars 21 of the end frames by catches or other fastening devices 41, and the separate parts or sections of the table are adapted to be connected at the middle, as shown at 42, and connected with one of said parts is a pivoted plate or bar 43, which is adapted to be passed through a keeper stat of the other part or section, and by means of this device the separate parts or sections of the table may also be longitudinally adjustable, and a third piece may be inserted at 42, the same as in adjustable tables as now constructed.
The object of raising the side rods,as shown in Fig. 3, when the device is used as a table is to get said side rods out of the wayin order that they will not interfere with the knees of those sitting at the table, and in Fig. tIhave shown my improvement when used as a sofa or chair, and in this position of the parts one of the side rods is raised into a vertical position While the other remains in the position shown in Fig. 2, and in practice a suitable pad, cushion,or other form of upholstery may be provided, as shown in dotted lines at 45, and this, pad, cushion, or upholstery may be detachable and may be employed whenever desired.
It will thus be seen that my improvement may be used as a bedstead or crib, and may also be used as a rocker, or as a sofa or chair, and it will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
The spring-arms 34, which consist of the two sections 35 and 36, may be constructed in any desired manner, the only object in this connection being to so form these arms that they will be longitudinally adjustable, and to connect the outer ends thereof with the center rod and the side rods of the frame and so that they will turn on the said center rods, and the side rods maybe so connected therewith as to turn in the outer ends thereof, if desired, or may be rigidly secured thereto.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A combination bedstead, table and rocker, consisting of two base bars or sup ports, a rocker mounted on each of said base bars or supports, an upright frame connected with each of said rockers, a central rod by which said end frames are connected, springarms connected with said central rod, side rods connected with said spring-arms, and devices by which either of said side rods may be raised and locked in connection with the end frames above the central rod, fsubstantially as shown and described.
