Description

' tats/:
A. J. SMITH, OF CANAL DOVER, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 91,781, (lated June 22, 1869.
rMPRovED LAsTINe-IRN.
Thel Schedule referred to in these Lettera Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom t't may concern:
Be it known that I, A. J. SMITH, of Canal Dover, in the county of Tuscarawas, and in the State of Ohio, have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvements in Lasting-Iron; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, andl to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and general arrangement of' a lasting-iron, by which the leather will be drawn evenly from both sides to the bottom of the last, and nailed in place.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, tomake the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part .of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a frcnt view, and
Figure 2 is a side view.
A A represent two curved jaws, hinged or pivoted, as seen in fig. l, forming the main body of the lastingiron, somewhat in the shape of a horseshoe.
The outer ends of said main jaws are slotted for a suitable distance, and in said slots smaller jaws B B are pivoted, which are so arranged on the main jaws, that when closed, the outer sides of the lasting-iron will present an even surface.
The ends of the jaws A A and B B are corrugated on the inside, so as to rmly hold the leather.
rEhe main jaws A A are held apart by a spring, C, placed on their inner sides, as seen in iig. 1.
A screw-rod, D, is passed vertically through the point where the jaws A A are pivoted together.
The inner end of this screw, which passes through a loose ferrule, E, is slotted or split, and in this slot are secured two spring-rods a a, the.A outer ends ot' which pass through the slots in the ends of -the main.
jaws A A, and are secured tothe smaller jaws BB.
G represents the handle of the iron, which handle is provided with a nut to screw on the screw-rod D, and by the use of which the smaller jaws B B are made to close on the main jaws, and the main jaws to contract.
The operation of my lasting-iron is too simple to need any mention.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The main jaws A A, pivoted together, and held apart by the spring O, in combination with the smaller jaws B B, pivoted in slots on the main jaws,-substan tially as shown and described.
2. In combination with the jaws AA, B B, and spring C, the screw-rod D, ferrule E, connecting-rods c a, and handle G, -all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 20th day of March, 1869.
, A. J. SMITH.
