Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 6, 1909.
Application filed July 25, 1908. Serial No. 445,352.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that l, EGMONT B. ARNOLD, a
citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Publication-Binders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description therof.
My invention consists in 'certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and pointed out in claims herewith, its object being to provide simple, economical, strong, durable binder backs and holders for periodical publications, especially single publications such as telephone directories.
Figure l of the drawings represents a perspective view of a binder-back and publication-holder in accordance with my inven tion; Fig. 2, a similar view of a fragment of the holder aforesaid; Fig. 3, a perspective view of another form of holder, and Fig. 4i, a transverse section view of the back with which the form of holder shown by Fig. 3 is employed.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A indicates a back-block to which binder-cow ers (not shown) are flexibly connected in practice, and B indicates a plate that is riveted or otherwise rigidly secured to the block, the ends of this plate being bent at right-angles to the remainder of same and suitably slotted. A binder-back having laterally extended and slotted ends is an important feature of my invention that may be variously attained. Hence I do not confine myself to any specific construction of such a back.
In Fig. l, the laterally extended end I) of the back is provided with a pair of slots 0,
and the opposite laterally extended end (Z of said back is provided with a single slot 0 that is equal in dimensions to the slots aforesaid plus the area of the intervening material. The several slots for the en gagement of parallel long stretches f of a suitably bent single preferably flat strip that constitutes a publication holder, a short stretch g of the strip between the stretches aforesaid being stopped against the end I) the binder-back.
The ends of the publication holder ex tending beyond the end cl of the binderback are provided with eyes for the engagement of a hanger-ring G or other suitable keeper. The two long stretches of the holder above specified may extend through a single publication of sufficient thickness set in between the ends 5, d, of the binder-back, the slotting of the end (Z of said back facilitating the placing of said holder in working position, but each of said stretches may extend through a separate publication disposed similar to the one aforesaid. It also follows that the width of the binder-back may be extended and its ends suitably slotted for the engagement therewith of a plurality of publication-holders similar to the one above specified.
In Fig. 3, I show a publication-holder in the form of a strip it having a right-angle stop-end 2' and a keeper-eye in its other end. For this form of holler both ends of the binder-back for a single publication is centrally slotted similar to the end 5 in Fig. 4:, but the width of said back may be indefi nitely increased and its laterally projecting ends suitably slotted to accommodate a plurality of holders similar to the one shown in Fig. 8, for a corresponding number of publications.
I claim:
1. A binder-back having laterally extended slotted ends, a publication-holder engage able with the end slots of said back, a stop at one end of the holder, and a keeper engageable with the other end of said holder.
2. A binder-back having laterally extended slotted ends, a publication-holder engageable with the end slots of said back, a stop at one end of the holder, and a hanger-ring engageable with the other end of said holder.
3. A binder-back having laterally extended slotted ends, a publication-holder in the form of a single strip bent to present a pair of parallel long stretches and an intervening stretch, the long stretches being engageable with the end slots of said back, and akeeper engageable with the ends of the strip.
4. A binder-back having laterally extended slotted ends, a publication-holder in the have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in form of a single strip bent to present a pair the county of Milwaukee and State of Wis- 10 of parallel long stretches and an intervening consin in the presence of two witnesses.
stretch, the long stretches being engageable r with the end slots of said back, and a hanger- EGMONT ARNOLD ring engageable with eyes in the ends of the Witnesses:
strip. GEORGE FELBER,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I G150. W. YOUNG.
