One object of this invention is to provide a book holder and display device of new and improved form.

Another object of this invention is to provide an imyet simple construction.

Still another object of the invention is to provide an improved book holder and display device which allows the ready removal and insertion of a book, catalogue or the like.

In general, the principles and objects of this invention are accomplished in one embodiment of the invention including a channel-shaped member having a pair of large-area cover panels connected thereto and rotatable with respect thereto. The channel member includes two pairs of brackets, one pair rigidly connected to each end thereof. Between the individual members of each pair of brackets is inserted a rod, and a pair of flexible straps are loosely mounted on each rod. The channel member has a window opening therein and a card holder insertable into said opening and held in position therein for use in identifying the contents of the book held by the holder. A removable channel-shaped piece is provided to cover the channel member and a book or catalogue oris rotatable when the shaft is mounted in a book holding assembly. l

Referring to the drawings a book holder 1t) according to the invention includes a central channel member 12 having two side panels 14 and 16 and two

end panels

18 and 20 and a bottom panel 22. The channel member 12 is preferably made of a durable material, for example, a metal such as steel or the like. A pair of large

The channel member 12 includes two pairs of brackets 42 welded or otherwise rigidly secured thereto with one pair of brackets at each end thereof. Referring `to Fig. 5, each bracket 42 includes a foot portion. 48 in contact with the bottom panel 22 and a second portion 50 in intimatecontact with the side panels 14 and 16. 32, 33, 34 and 35 and include a third portion 52 which extends above the side panels 14 and 16 a predetermined distance. The third portions 52 are provided with aligned openings 54 (Fig. 5). Rods 56 having threaded openings adapted to receive threaded bolts 58 are rotatably journalled in the openings 54 in each bracket 42 of the pairs of brackets disposed at each end of the channel member 12.

The channel member 12 is provided with a pair of and serve both as bearings in which a shaft 68 may be journalled and as external spacers to space one book holder from another. The book holder 10 thus is rotatably mounted on the shaft 68, and may be rotated as shown by the arrow in Fig. 2.

70 and 72 are adapted to be positioned between any selected leaves of a book 74 positioned between the pairs of brackets 42. Thus, the book 74 is held in position in the holder 10.

The bottom panel 22 of the channel member 12 is provided with a comparatively large-area opening 75 for receiving a means for identifying the nature and/or contents of the book 74 carried by the holder 10. A U- shaped strap 76 is fastened to the side panels 14 and 16 and extends therebetween parallel to the bottom panel 22 and spaced therefrom above the opening 75. The portion of the strap 76 extending between the side panels 14 and 16 is provided with at least two op-enings adapted to receive threaded bolts 78 which are adapted to be locked in place by locking nuts 80.

Referring to Fig. 7, the means for identifying the book` held by the holder 10 comprises a generally rectangular metal plate 82 its edges bent over to form a channel adapted to receive a card 83 on which identifying printing is provided and a transparent cover plate 84 of glass or the like which is also adapted to be inserted into the channel formed by the bent-over edges of the plate 82. The book identifying means is adapted to be mounted over the opening 75 in the bottom panel 22 with the card 83 and glass plate 84 oriented outwardly and visible from the outside of the holder 10. When the book` identifying means is thus oriented in the opening 75, the

A channel cover plate 86 comprising a top panel 87 and

88 and 89 is provided to be inserted into the channel member 12 with the top panel S7 oriented parallel to the bottom panel 22 and thereby lcomprising a top panel for the channel member. The plate 86 has pairs of notches 90 at each end thereof to provide access for the brackets 42. The cover plate also has a pair of aligned notches 92 in the

87 and 88 adapted to yreceive the strap 76 and a pair of generally semicircular notches 93 in the side panels adapted to follow the contour of the rod or shaft 68. The top panel 87 of the cover plate 86 is provided with a pair of generally circular openings 94 for use as iingergrips in removing the cover plate from its position of engagement with the channel 12.

In use of the book holder 1t), as shown in Fig. l, the book 74 is positioned between the pairs of brackets 42 with its back in contact with the cover plate 86 which is insertedwithin the channel member 12. The straps 7() and 72 are spaced -apart on the rods 56 and are linserted betweenselected leaves of the book whereby the book is rmly held within the holder. The holder' 10 and the book contained therein are ordinarily carried on the -shaft 68 and retained in a stand with the channel bottom panel 22 and book identifying card visible as shown in Fig. 2. When it is desired to scan the contents of the book, the holder is rotated about the shaft 60 to the position shown in dash lines in Fig. 2. With the holder thus positioned, the

24 and 26 are rotated to the open position and the book becomes accessible. When it is des ired to return the book to the stand, the cover panels are -rotated toward each other until their progress is stopped by the portions 52 of `the brackets d2. The book is then re-rotated around the shaft 68 to its closed position. Thus, the book holder of the invention provides a rugged yet simple apparatus for holding a large-size book or catalogue and making the same readily accessible to a reader. One particular advantage of the invention lies in the ease with which a book may be -removed and inserted in the holder through manipulation of the combination of rods 56 and

What is claimed is:

1. A book holder comprising a channel member, a pair of cover panels connected thereto, a pair of brackets at each end of said channel, said pairs of brackets being spaced apart with one pair at each end of said channel, a rod carried by each of said pairs of brackets and extending between each pair of brackets, and a pair of movable str-aps carried by said rods and extending between each pair of brackets, said straps being adapted to be inserted between the leaves of a book to be carried by vsaid holder.

2. A book Vholder comprising a channel member includinga pair of side panels and a bottom panel interconnecting said side panels, cover panels pivoted to each of said side panels, a pair of brackets at each end of said channel, said pairs of brackets being spaced apart with one pair at each end of said channel, a rod carried by each of said pairs of brackets and extending between each pair of brackets, and a pair of movable straps carried'by rods and extending between each pair of brackets, said straps being adapted to be inserted between the leaves of a book to be carried by said bolder, and the upper-ends of said brackets projecting above the side panels of said channel member.

3. A book holder comprising a channel member including a pair of side panels and an interconnecting bottom panel, a pair of large-area cover panelsconnected to said side plates and rotatable with respect thereto, a pair of brackets at each end of said channel member, said brackets extending above said side panels and being disposed in intimate contact with said side panels at the ends thereof and adjacent to the region of contact between said cover panels and said side panels whereby the rotation of said cover plates is limited by said brackets, a rod carried by each of said pairs of brackets and extending between each pair of brackets, and a pair of movable straps carried by said rods and extending between each pair 7 of brackets, `said straps being adapted to be inserted between the leaves of a book to be carried by said holder.

A book holder comprising a channel member including a pair of side panels, a bottom panel interconnecting said side panels and a pair of end panels interconnecting said side panels at the ends thereof, a pair of largearea cover panels connected to -said side panels and rotatable with respect thereto, a pair of brackets at each end of said channel member and in intimate contact with said side panels at the end thereof in the region of connection between said side panels and said end panels,k said pairs of brackets having aligned opemngs, a rod 1n-V terconnecting 4each pair of brackets, a pair of adjustable straps connected between said rods, and a cover member for said channel tmember, said cover member having notches adapted to receive said brackets.

5. A book holder comprising a channel member including a pair of side panels, a bottom panel interconnecting said side panels and a pair of end panels interconnecting side panels at the ends thereof, a pair of large-area cover panels connected to said side panels and rotatable with respect thereto, a pair of brackets at each end of said channel member and in intimate contact with said side panels at the ends thereof in the region of connection between said side panels and said end panels, said pairs of brackets having aligned openings, a rod interconnecting each pair of brackets, and a pair of adjustable straps connected between said rods, and a cover member for said channel member, said cover member having notches adapted to receive said brackets, each of said side panels being formed with an opening, said openings being aligned and being positioned substantially midway between the ends of said side panels, and spacer members present in each of said openings, said spacer members being adapted to journal a shaft about which said holder is rotatable.

6. The combination of claim 5, said cover member having notches aligned with said spacer members.

7. A book holder comprising a channel member having a bottom wall and a pair of upstanding side walls, a pair of cover panels hinged to the upper ends of the side walls, a pair of brackets at each end of said channel member, a rod carried by each of said pair of brackets and extending therebetween, one or more movable straps carried by said rods and extending between the brackets at each pair of brackets, said straps being adapted to be inserted between the leaves of a book to be carried by said holder, said brackets projecting above the side walls of the channel member and said rods being disposed above the side walls of said channel members and a cover member for said channel member, said cover member having a top wall parallel to and spaced from the bottom wall ot' said channel member and said cover member having walls extending downwardly from said top wall thereof and contacting the bottom wall of said channel member.

8. The combination of claim 7, said side walls of said channel member being formed with through openings, journals within said openings to receive a through rod on which to rotatably mount said book holder.

9. The combination of claim 8, said downwardly extending walls of said cover member constituting side walls located at the inner sides of the side walls of said channel member and being formed with notches aligned with said journals and through which said rod may pass.
