UNITED STATES VPATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS HAAS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MUSIC-ROLL CONTAINER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Louis HAAs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, New York county, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Music-Roll Containers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in music roll containers, the object of the invention being to provide a proper centering means for the roll and a strengtheningl and reinforcing device for the container, whereby when the roll is inserted and in place, the danger of injury to the box is eliminated.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention; Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the lane of the line c x of Fig. 1, looking to the right; Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the plane of the line 'y-y of Fig. 3, looking to the left.
1 represents a roll of music, of the wellknown form, provided with pin-like extensions 1a at each end, by means of which'the roll is supported when in use to a suitable music playing instrument.
2`is a box, usually of pasteboard, the dimensions of the same being proper to receive the roll 1. The usual cover (not shown) may be applied to close in the box 2 after the roll is inserted therein.
It is obvious that if no means were rovided to prevent end play of the roll that in transportation the pins 1 a 1 a might puncture the end of the box and injure it seriously. The main object of my invention is to provide a simple and e'ective means for reinforcing the box, and so center and hold the roll that this injury will be prevented. To that end I provide, within the box, and at each end thereof, a novel form of guidecentering and reinforcing device comprising, in its preferable form, a main body 3 of U-shaped outline. Projecting rearwardly therefrom and at a relatively abru t angle are legs 4 4. The ends of these egs are flared outwardly to form the bearings 5 5,
while the extreme ends of the bearings 5 5 f are provided with prongs 6 6, or equivalent attaching devices. The end of the box is punctured to receive the attaching devices 6 6, and when these are passed through Specification of Letters Patent.

and bent down (as best seen in Figs. 1 and 2) they securely hold the U-shaped frame 3 in place.
In the preferred construction, although in some forms this is not necessary, I provide upward extensions 7 7, which project upwardly from the U-shaped frame 3 and recede at an easy angle, as best seen in Fig. 4. These extensions 7 7 are likewise provided with attaching devices 8 8 which may puncture the end of the box, and be clenched or otherwise secured thereto, as best seen in Fig. 2. The inclines formed by these upward extensions serve to center the roll as it is dropped into the box, guiding it to the proper osition, wherein the pin extensions 1 a 1t w1 l be properly received in the lower part of the recess in the U-shaped frame 3. The offset of the frame 3 is sufficient to space the end of its respective pin 1 a away from the end of the box, hence it will serve to prevent such endwise movement of the roll within the container as would puncture the box. This construction has many advantages, such as simplicity, economy and lightness, Furthermore, it presents an attractive appearance.
The attaching devices 6 6 and 8 8 may be exposed at the outer ends ofthe box, but, if desired, a paper covering may be pasted over the same to hide them. Thisis not essential because, when the cover is applied, said attaching devices will be hidden from view. The supplemental'covering, however, is preferred, since it tends to protect the cover from abrasion as well as presenting a more finished appearance.
I/Vhat I claim is:
1. In a music roll container, a roll guide and centering device, comprising a plate having a recess in the side thereof facing the open side of said box, integral legs at opposite edges of said plate, feet integral with said legs arranged to afford a broad bearing, and attaching devices integral with said feet for securing said plate to the end of said container and within the same, but spaced apart therefrom.
2. In a music roll container, a roll guide and centering device, comprising a plate having a recess in the side thereof facing the open side of said box, integral legs at opposite edges of said plate, feet integral with said legs arranged to afford a broad bearing, and
attaching devices integral with said feet for curing each of said extensions to said consecuring said plate to the end of said oontainei end. tainer and Within the same but spacedv apart therefrom, and upward integral extensions LOUIS HAAS from said plate on opposite sides of said re- Witnesses: cess, said extensions inolinin'g from said plate R. C. MITCHELL,
