Description
Patented Nov. 29, |898. F. E. JONES.
HAT BOX.
(Application led Aug. 8, 189B.)
(Nn Model.)
FRANCES E. JONES, OF WVILSON, NORTH CAROLlNA.
HAT-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,956, dated November 29, 1898. Application filed August 8, 1898. Serial No. 688,142. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCES E. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilson, in the county of Wilson and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
The object of this invention is to provide the ordinary hat-box, such as is used for shipping purposes, with a simple, inexpensive, and efficient means for securing the hat therein against displacement, thereby to prevent crushing or other damage which arises from the rough handling incident to shipping; and it has for a further object the utilization of this securing means to form the outer binding of the box, by which to hold the cover in place, as well as to reinforce the entire package.
The invention has special reference to boxes for use in shipping ladies hats or for preserving such hats while touring, as in boxes of this nature it is of the greatest importance that the hat be firmly held against displacement and the box be deep enough so as not to bear against any of the hats trimmings.
Therefore the invention consists, primarily, in providing a suitable hat box or case with one or more tying tapes or strings fastened to the box and adapted to be passed through the box from side to side and through suitable openings therein, whereby to bind over the crown of the hat without in any way engaging the trimmings or such thereof as would be damaged by the contact, and thus in being secured either by tying the ends of the strings or otherwise forming a secure fastening for the hat.
The invention further consists in a hat-box provided with eyeleted openings in its sides and one or more tying tapes or strings suitably fastened to the box and adapted to pass through the said eyeleted openings and from side to side, crossing over the crown of the hat, and to be finally brought through the sides of the box and around the cover, then fastened either at t-he top or on the under side of the box.
In the accompanying illustrations, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box with my invention applied, the same being shown ready for shipping; Fig. 2, a vertical sectional view taken on the line x x of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a top or plan view looking into the open box prior to placing the cover on.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A indicates a simple form of box, which is preferably made of pasteboard, and B the cover. While the rectangular form of the box, as shown, is that preferred, it is obvious that the invention is equally applicable to boxes of various forms and construction.
At the base of the box, on opposite sides and preferably on the outside thereof, are secured tying tapes or strings C and C', respectively, and about midway the height of the box each side is centrally provided with an eyelet D for the passage therethrough of the tying-tape. Each of the tapes C and C' is carried through the eyelet above its fastened end and brought together over the center of the hat-crown, there made to cross each other and pass out through the as yet Unthreaded eyelets of the box and in opposite directions. At this stage of the operation of securing the hat within the box the ends of the tapes may be fastened under the box by a simple tie should it be desired to leave the box open for exhibition purposes; but on placing the cover on the box the tapes are carried directly from the last-mentioned eyelets andmade to cross over the top, as in Figs. l and 2, thence to be drawn over the sides, which as yet have been unembraced by the tapes, and tied, as at E, on the under side of the box. Thus it will be seen that not only is the hat made permanently secure without the use of any injurious contacting means, but that the simple means employed perform the additional function of an outer binding whereby to keep the cover on and give reinforcement to the entire package.
While the invention has been shown and described as employing two tapes, substantially similar results can be obtained with a single tape of sufficient length, and such is within the spirit and scope of the invention.
For the purpose of making the box the more serviceable there is provided therein, as shown, an envelop or pocket F, fastened to one of the sides for the reception of the hatveil or other loose trimmings of the hat.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a hat-box having openings formed in the side Walls thereof intermediate the top and bottom, and in such position relative to each other that straight lines connecting the opposite openings Will intersect, of a tying tape or cord adapted to have its ends passed through the openings in opposite sides of the box, cross each other over the hat therein, pass out in opposite directions through the openings in the other sides, and then to pass over the cover and be tied; substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a hat-box having openings formed in the side walls thereof intermediate the top and bottom, and in such position relative to each other that straight lines connecting opposite openings Will interseet, of tying-tapes fastened to the outside of the box, adapted to have their free ends passed through the openings in opposite sides of the box, cross each other therein, pass out in opposite directions through the openings in the other sides, and then to pass over the cover and be tied; substantially as set forth. In Witness whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature, in the presence of tWo Witnesses, this 9th day of July, 1898.
FRANCES E. JONES. XVitnesses:
