Description

P. PEAR.
DISPLAY BOX.
.PatentedApr.-18, 1-893.
INVENTUHI UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK FEAR, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
DISPLAY-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 495,949, dated April 18, 1893. Anplication filed March 22, 1892. Renewed March 25, 1893- Serial No. 467,658. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERIcK FEAR, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display Boxes or Cases, of which the following is a specification.
M yinvention relates to a display box or case constructed in a manner to display packages or bottles contained therein without destroying or otherwise disfiguring the same, all of which will be fully described hereinafter.
It has heretofore been one of the most 0bjectionable features among the retail dealers to have a number of small packages concealed within an inclosed box and no way of displaying them without removinga few, then replacing the cover and piling the removed packages upon the box without any protection or guard for them. In this condition they are easily knocked down from their position, thereby disfiguring their contour or destroying them completely. I propose to obviate these objections by my invention which consists of a box having a removable cover and a removable front. The base of the box is provided with a guard which may extend across the face of the box at or near its base or it may be arranged in sections. This, however, may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention. The rear side of the removable front side is provided with a holder near its base, all of which will be fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawingsz-Figure 1, represents a perspective view of the box closed. Fig. 2, is a similar view representing the box opened and displaying its contents together with the front side of the box arranged as a display card. Fig. 3, is a vertical central section of the box in its opened position. Fig. 4, is a perspective view of the removable front detached in which is shown the holder suitably secured to the rear side thereof.
Similarletters refer to similar parts th rou ghout the drawings in which a, represents the removable front of the box held in position at its base by means of the guard 12, behind which it rests on the base of said box and at its upper end by the coverc. The structure as here represented may contain a series of packages represented by dotted lines in Fig. 2, or it may contain bottles. This however will be immaterial.
The box and its packages are soldin bulk to the retailer who upon the receipt thereof removes the top 0, of the box and places it on the bottom thereof as shown in Fig. 2. The front a, is then removed and placed upon the upper edge of the rear side 01, and is held to the latter by means of the holder 6, which may be secured to the said front side a,byan eyelet or other suitable fastening.
I do not wish to confine myself to the exact constrnction as herein shown as I may make the box cylindrical or polygonal at the same time retaining the same features as hereindescribed.
The box may be made of pasteboard, paper, metal, leather, wood, or other suitable material. The guard Z), may be integral with or otherwise connected with the base, or it may form a part of the vertical ends. The guard may extend partly across the face of the box. I therefore, do not wish to limit myself to this particular feature as I may design the same in various ways without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a display box having a removable cover stationary sides back and base of a guard arranged on said base said guard adapted to receive a removable front side substantially as shown and described.
2. In a display box the combination consisting of the removable cover the stationary sides back and base the guard secured to said base the removable front side heldin position by the said removable cover and guard and the holder secured to the back of the removable front side aforesaid substantially as shown and described.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 21st day of December, 1891.
FREDERICK FEAR.
