LOUIS HAAS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MUSIC-ROLL CONTAINER.
Application filed Ivarch 5, 1908.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 25, 1909.
Serial No. 419,279.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, Louis Hans, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Music -Roll Containers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in music roll containers, the object of the invention being to provide a proper centering means for the roll and a strengthening" and reinforcing device for the container, whereby when the roll is inserted in place and while it is in place, the danger of injury to the box is eliminated.
ln the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan viewT of a container with the roll in place and cover removed, said view being broken away at the center, Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the container with the cover removed g Fig. 3 is a cross section of the container, including the cover and looking toward one end g l? ig. 4 is a longitudinal section taken at one side of a median line and looking toward the centering device, the latter and one end of the roll being shown in elevation.
1 represents a roll of music of well-known form, said roll having pin-like extensions l a at each end, by means of which the roll is supported when in use in a suitable music playing instrument.
2 is a box or container, usually made of pasteboard, the dimensions being proper to receive the roll 1.
2 is a cover, such as is customarily employed, for the box 2.
lt is obvious that if no means were provided to prevent end play of the roll within i tainer.
the box, the pins l a might puncture the ends of the same and injure it seriously.
The main object of this invention is to provide a simple and effective means for reinforcing the ends of the box l, so as to properly guide the roll in lace when it is being inserted, and so as to iold it in such a manner as to prevent the a'bove injury to the ends of the box.
O'uide centering and reinforcing device com- D n n l b l l t, n
prismg, 1n its preferable form, a main body or plate 8, which furnishes a backing. Projecting forwardly from each edge of this main body 3 are cheek pieces ll-4, the edges of which incline from their lower ends toward To that end l provide, within the box and at each end thereof, a novel form of may be secured to the box end.
the backing 3, as best seen in Fig. l. 5 is a supporting shoulder at the bottom of the backing plate 3, formed by turning up the lower end or extremity of said plate. 6 6 are clips at the upper edge of the plate 3 and arranged to be bent over tightly upon the upper edge of the end of the box. The outline of the blank from which this reinforcing device is formed, is such as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. B. To fasten the reinforcing device in place requires merely the turning over of the ears (5MG, so that they will tightly embrace the material forming the end of the box. The space between the ears el and 5 is U-shaped when viewed from the inner side (see Fig. 3), and into this U-shaped space the pin end l L slides when the roll is inserted., so that said roll will stand approximately as shown in Fig. l, in which position no amount of jarring or vibration will cause said roll to shift longitudinally in the box so as to puncture the ends.
The plate 3 not only provides an impervious backing to prevent puncture by either pin end la, but it also provides a. broad bearing against the inner face of the box end, whereby it will be prevented itself from cutting through or piercing said box end.
l/Vhat I claim is:
l. In a device of the character described, a box-like container for music rolls, a sheet metal roll centering and reinforcing device comprising a fiat plate and a pin support formed therefrom comprising integral sides bent forward from said plate and a bottom support bent forwardly from said plate, the forward edges of the integral side members receding upwardly toward the plate to form a guiding incline, and fastening means whereby said plate may be secured in the con- 2. In a device of the character described, a box-like container for music rolls, a roll centering and end reinforcing device comprising a flat plate, the sides and lower edges being bent forwardly to form a pin-receiving recess, the extreme edges of the forwardly projecting sides receding upwardly Itoward the plate, and integral fastening devices near the upper edge of said plate whereby the same In a music roll container, a box arranged to receive the roll, a roll centering and end reinforcing device comprising a frame providing a pin-receiving recess open at the top, fastening devices integral with the top of said frame arranged to secure the same to the boX end, said frame including a broad bearing arranged to rest latvvise against the inner Wall of the end of the box and constituting an integral backing arranged in line yWith the axis of a music roll when the latter clined edges said ears being bent forward to cause said edges to lie in substantially the same plane, a depending ear, said depending ear being bent forwardly to furnish a pin supportI an upwardly projecting ear arranged to be bent over to secure said device in place on the end of said container.
