PAPER BOX.
(Application filed Sept, 18, 1900.)

UNITED Stamps nrrnir met,
WILLIAM B. GRIM, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA;
PAPER BOX.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 676,747, dated J1 time 18, 1901.
Application filed September 18, 1900. Serial No. 30,379. (No model.)
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. GRIM, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper Boxes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
Myinvention consists of an improved construction of a closure for a paper box which can be cheaply manufactured and is unusually strong and durable, the novel features being hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1. represents a perspective view of a box embodying myinvention. Fig. 2 represents, on an enlarged scale, a broken perspective View of a portion of the closure of the box.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a box, the same consisting of the cylindrical or other shaped body portion B, upon which rests the closure top or cover 0, the latter consisting of the depending rim flange or body D, which has the laterally or inwardly deflected angular tabs or serrated portions E, which have inclined sides and are suitably secured on the top or head F by means of the stitches G, the stitching being preferably effected by a wire-stitching machine of any suitable construction, whereby a stapling effect is had, as will be understood from Fig. 2, the terminals H of the stitchesG being located underneath said top and said stitches beinglocated substantiallyin the central portion of the lapped tabs E and extending in the present instance on a substantially radial line toward the center of the box.
In constructing the cover of my improved box in practice I first score the same on the line K, it being noted that the angle or place of interjunction of the sides of the tabs E is located at one side of the scoring, and the periphery of the head F is at said angle, so that the edge portion of said head is embraced by the rim and tabs, thus inclosing said portion and forming a strong structure and concealing the edge of the head, it being noticed that the rim and tabs are bent around the top F and the tabs and head are stitched together, the stitches or staples beinginserted radially, so as to extend approximately the full length of the tabs or in the direction from the outer periphery toward the point portions, thereby materially increasing the sccuring-surface of the staples and most tightly connecting the tabs with the head.
It will be understood that the bottom J of the box is constructed in substantially the same manner as the cover 0, already described, the body 13 of said box having inwardly-turned tabs similar to E, which are secured as seen in Fig. 2.
It will of course be apparent that while my invention is especially adapted to construct ing cylindrical or oval paper boxes, which are generally employed as packing-boxes for hats, the same is equally applicable to boxes of other shapes and which may be constructed out of other materials, and I do not therefore desire to limit myself to the exact construction I have herein shown and described nor to my specific construction of a machine whereby the stitching of the angular tabs or overlapping portions E is effected.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A box having a closure therefor, consisting of a circumferential rim, tabs inturned from said rim, a head inclosed by said rim, and embraced at the angle of said rim and tabs, and wire stitches passing through said tabs and head and clenched and extending in the radial direction of the tabs from the periphery of the said rim to the point portions of said tabs.
