JOHN T. DOERFLINGER, OF SANDUSKY, OTIIO.
BASKET.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 635,675, dated October 24, 1899.
Application filedll'nly 18, 1899- To to whom it may concern: Be it known that 1, JOHN W. DOERFLINGER, of Sandusky, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Basket, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved basket more especially designed for containing and shipping fruits, vegetables, and other perishable produce, goods, and other articles and. arranged to insure proper ventilation for the contents of the basket and allow of ready stacking in wagons, cars, and other means of transportation.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as willbe fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of the improvement on the line 1 1 in Fig. 2, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
The improved basket has its body formed of two sets of splints A A, interwoven with each'ot-her to form the bottom of the basket, the free ends of the splints being bent at right angles to the bottom to form the sides of the basket, the splints being somewhat spaced apart to leave openings between adjacent splints for ventilating purposes, as is plainly indicated in the drawings. Thus by the arrangement described an approximately square shape is given to the basket.
The upper ends of the splints A A are arranged between and fastened to inner and outer bands B B, of which the bands B overlap each other on the sides formed. by the splints A and the outer bands overlap each other at the splints A at the other sides of the basket, as is plainly indicated in the drawlngs.
In order to form convenient handles for the basket, I interpose between the outer band B and the splints A segmental blocks 0, secured in place by nails or other fastening de= vices 0, extending through the bands B B and the blocks 0, as indicated in Fig. 1. A
Serial No. 72 L253. (No model.)
second set of innerand outer bands D D are arranged on the sides of the basket, between the top and bottom thereof, said bands being overlapped in precisely the same manner as the top bands B B.
In order to strengthen and to reinforce the sides of the basket containing the handles, I provide reinforcing-strips E, two in number and extending over the outer faces of the sides and under the bottom, the starting and ending ends of the bands being inside of the outer bands B at the ends of the handles, as is plainly indicated in the drawings, the reinforcing-strips E also extending over the outer bands D, as shown in Fig. 1. The bottom portions of these strips are reinforced by bars F, fitted against the under side of the bottom of the basket, the strips passing under the bars, as is plainly shown in Fig. 1. Suitable nails or other fastening devices are employed for fastening the strips E and their bars F in place, so that a very strongly reinforced basket is produced.
By having the reinforcing-strips and their bars on the under side of the bottom of the basket it is evident that when the basket is placed on the ground the bottom proper does not rest on the ground, but on said strips,so that proper ventilation is had underneath the bottom as well as by the spaces between adjacent splints forming the sides of the basket. By the arrangement described the top of the basket is entirely flush with the upper ends of the splints, so that baskets may be stacked in storerooms, cars, wagons, and other vehicles. 1
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and'desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Abasket, comprising splints interlocked at their middle portion to form the bottom of the basket, the free ends of the splints being bent at right angles to the bottom portions to form the sides of the basket, said splints being spaced and the basket being square in form, inner and outer top bands between which the upper ends of the splints are secured, and handles at the upper ends of the splints forming opposite sides, the handles being held in place by the outer band, sub stantially as shown and described.
2. A basket having at its top, inner and outer bands, the outerband being spaced from the body of the basket at opposite sides to form laterally-projecting handles, substantially as described.
3. A basket having at its top inner and outer bands between which the upper edge of the body is secured, and provided at opposite sides with blocks interposed between the outer band and the body, substantially as described.
4. A basket consisting of interlocking splints forming the bottom of the basket and bent at right angles whereby to form the sides of the same, inner and outer top bands between which the upper ends of the splints are secured and segmental blocks secured within the outer band on opposite sides thereof whereby to form handles for the baskets, as and for the purpose set forth.
5. A basket consisting ofinterlocked splints forming the bottom of the basket and bent at right angles whereby to form the sides of the basket, inner and outer bands between which the upper ends of the splints are secured, oppositely-disposed blocks interposed between and secured to the outer band and adjacent splints whereby to form handles, reinforcing-strips extending over the outside of the two opposite sides of the bottom and having their ends secured between the outerband and the blocks, reinforcing-bars between the bottom portions of the strips and the bottom portions of the splints, and a second set of inner and outer bands extending around the sides of the basket and on the inside of the reinforcing-strips, as and for the purpose set forth.
