UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW J. HORSEY, OF LAUREL, DELAWARE.
CRATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 265,083, dated September 26, 1882.
Application filed August 3,1882. (no model.)
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, ANDREW J. HoRsEY, a
. citizen of the United States, residing at Laurel,
' following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to; improvements in crates for packing berry-boxes, eggs, &c., which are made of slats and have open sides and ends; and the object of my invention is to provide a crate that is light and strong, and is constructed with convenient openings at the ends for lifting and handling. This I accomplish by constructing the ends of the crate with two oppositely-inclined slats which diverge at the top, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- I Figure 1 is a perspective view of a crate embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is an end view ofthe same.
The crate, like many in common use, has open sides formed of the vertical slats A, secured'at the top and bottom to the strips B, which run around the edges of the crate, and has the bottom 0 and hinged cover D. The corners are strengthened by the angle-irons E. .At the ends, in place of vertical slats, I introduce the inclined slats F, which touch at the bottom in the center of the end of the crate and diverge at the top, the upper ends of the said slats coming just inside the corners of the crate. Both the top and bottom ends of the slats are fastened to the strips B in the same manner as the side slats, and they are nailed to the ends of the bottom board. It will thus be seen that a triangular opening, H, is formed at each end of the crate, which makesaconvenienthand-hole, and that the inclined slats forming the opening operate-as diagonal braces and strengthen and stiffen the crate.
I am aware that a fruit-box has heretofore been constructed with a rectangular top rim, a smaller bottom rim of corresponding form, and inclined slats connected with said rims, the objectof this construction being to provide boxes with tapering bodies capable of nesting into each other.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a crate, the combination of the inclined end slats, F, meeting at the bottom and diverging at the top, with the rectangular top and bottom rims, B, of uniform size, the vertical side slats, A, and the bottom board, 0, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANDREW J. HORSEY.
