JOHN THEODOEE FEAGEE, OE ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
EGG-BAS KET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 404,349, dated May 28, 1889. Application tiled March 31, 1888. Serial No. 269,080. (Model.)
To aZZ whom it' may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN THEODORE FEA- GER, of St. Louis, Missouri, have made a new and useful Improvement in Egg-Baskets, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
This device is designed more especially for farmers uses-that is, a case filled with eggs can' be placed within the basket, then carried in a wagon to town, and then unloaded and returned, and in removing the contents of the package not only the eggs, but also the case, as stated, can be taken out of the basket, leaving the basket to be Otherwise used upon the return-trip, and to receive another case when used another time, all substantially as shown i-n the annexed drawings, Inakin g part of this specification, in which- Figure l is aview in perspective of the improvement, the basket-cover being raised;
Fig. 2, a vertical cross-section Of the same,
the cover in place and the handle upturned; Fig. 3, a view in perspective of the case, and Fig. 4 a vertical longitudinal section of one endof the improved basket.
The same letters of reference denote the same parts.
A represents the basket proper, and A the cover, both made Of wicker-work, and B represents the case. As illustrated in the drawings, the basket has twO handles, d a., and they are so made and applied to the body a of the basket as to enable them to be turned upward over the basket-body a and top a2 and to be turned downward to come snugly against the lower corners, as a3, respectively, of the basket, and thus to present no obstacle to the packing of the basket with other articles in the bed of a wagon Or other place. This position of the handles is shown in Fig. 1.
The basket-top a2 can be fastened tO the basket-body a by means ofl the catch a4.
The case B, which is made in any of the usual and ordinary ways, and may be rigid Or adapted to fold, as may be desired, by
means Of suitable artitions b h is divided into the usual compartments, b2, in which the eggs to be carried are placed. The case and basket are SO relatively constructed as tO provide a space, C. between the bottom b3 of the case and the bottom a5 of the basket. A similarspace, C', is formed at each side between the case side b4 and the basketside d, as
shown in Fig. 2. A similar space, C2, Fig.` 4, is formed between the case end b5 and the basket end al. By applying the top a2, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, a space, C3, is formed above the case beneath the basket-top. The case at its edges be, projecting below the bottom, comes in contact with the basket, and also at or toward its upper portion, t7, Substantially as shown in Figs. 2 and 4.
The upper portion, a7, of the part A Of the basket is made by a rectangular hoop of smaller dimensions than the body of the basket, around which the wicker-work is woven. Consequently this edge is slightly contracted, as shown in Fig. 2, to afford a binding action upon the egg-case, so as to hold it tight and firm in position when placed within it, and there is also thereby provided the shoulder a8 On the outside for the cover to rest upon. In this manner a very safe, convenient package is provided forthe purpose in view. During the transportation of the package the wickerwork construction of the Outer portion of the package of itself is an efficient means for guarding the inner portion Of the package, irrespective Of the spacing apart, as described, Of the two pOrtiOns'Of the package. Such spacing apart, however, is of material value in promoting the safety of the contents of the case, and it also may, when vacant,be useful for ventilation purposes.
lf desired, an elastic or equivalent packing maybe used between the portions A l5 of the package.
l. The within-described device, consisting Of the wicker-work basket A, having an upper portion, a7, and a shoulder, as, combined with the egg-case B, having plain walls, as and for the purpose stated.
2. The wicker-work basket A, having the upper binding portion, a7, combined with the egg-case B, having plain walls projecting below its bottom, whereby the case comes in contact with the basket at its bottom edges, h6, and at its upper portion, U, and a ventilating-space is provided between the sides and bottoms of the case and basket, substantially as set forth.
