Description

P. W. NIGOLA.
GARBAGE REGEPTAGLE.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 13, 1908.
Patented Feb. 23, 1909.
vi il m nu 1 4V PATENT ()FFICE.
PETER W. NIOOLA, OF LEAVENWORTH, KANSAS.
GARB AGE -RE CEPTACLE Application filed June 13,
' tion.
This invention relates to garbage receptacles and more especially to that class in which the receptacle is supported in an opening in a fence so as to be accessible to a person at the inner side of the fence and capable of being drawn outwardly through said opening by a garbage collector, my special object being to produce a simple, strong, durable and ineX enslve garbage receptacle of the class out med which can be easily removed from and replaced in position by the garbage collector, and in which a person at the inner side of the fence can easily and quickly deposit garbage.
A further object is to produce a springactuated lid which will automatically close the rece tacle and automatically yield to permit tile receptacle to be drawn outward y the garbage collector.
With these general objects in view and others as hereinafter appear, the invention consists in certain novel and peculiar features of construction and organization as hereinafter described and claimed; and m 1 order that it may be fully understood reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in whichigure 1, is a perspective view of a fence equipped with a garbage receptacle embodying my invention. Fig. 2, is an enlarged vertical section taken on the dotted line II of Fig. 1. Fi 3, is a vertical section on the line IIIII of Fig. 2.
In the said drawing, 1 indicates a fence of the type shown or of any other suitable or preferred type, 2 indicating the bottom rail and 3 the top rail of the fence.
4 indicates an opening in the fence between said rails, registering notches 5 and 6 being formed centrally in the upper edge of the bottom rail and in the fence at the lower edge of the opening 4 to accommodate downward movement of a spring catch 7, secured to said bottom rail and projecting outwardly through the opening of the fence.
8 indicates a horizontal bar secured to the outer side of the fence at the upper end of the opening 4, and 9 indicates a receptacle Specification of Letters Patent.

1 preferably rect ngular in form, to fit snugly I/V. NICOLA, a i in and close opening 1 below cross bar 8 and rest upon the bottom rail 2, the front wall of said receptacle being shorter than the rear wall, by preference, with the upper edges of the side walls sloped or inclined downward from the rear to the front wall.
l/Vhen the receptacle occupies the position described, it stands at the inner side of the fence with its rear wall approximately in the plane of the outer side of the fence with the catch underlying the bottom and also bearing against the rear wall of the receptacle so as to prevent outward movement of the lower end of the latter, inward movement beyond the position shown being prevented by the ends of the handles 10, secured to the rear wall of the receptacle and completely bridging the opening so as to overlap the fence at opposite sides of said opening as shown-most clearly in Fig. 1, the projecting ends of said handles being numbered 11.
12 indicates the lid, the same having a downwardly and rearwardly inclined edge 13, and downwardly and inwardly inclined side edges 14, and said lid is hinged at its rear edge as at 15, to cross bar 8, the said hinges being equipped with the springs 16 which tend to swing the lid downwardly and outwardly.
In practice the parts are normally disposed as shown. When garbage is to be dumped into the receptacle, the lid is raised and when it is released it automatically closes the receptacle. When the garbage collector arrives he stands at the outer side of the fence and places his foot on and depresses catch 7 into the notches 5 and 6 and grasps handles 10 and pulls the garbage receptacle outwardly through the opening, the pressure of the upper edge of the front wall of the receptacle acting as a wedge on edge 13 of the lid to automatically raise the same sufliciently to permit of such withdrawal of the receptacle, the lid then swinging downward to a vertically-pendent position. After the garbage is dumped, the receptacle is pushed inwardly through the opening, the spring-catch yielding to permit this operation to take place and springing upward to its original position as soon as the projecting ends 11 of the handles strike the fence at opposite sides of the opening 4. As the receptacle is thus forced back to operative position, its front wall by engagement with the bottom of the lid forces the latter upward against the resistance of the spring hinges, until said wall attains a position vertically below the edge 13 of the lid, the latter then automatically swinging or dropping down into operative position upon and closing the receptacle at the same instant that the catch engages its rear wall to prevent accidental outward movement. The pitched or inclined side edges 14 of the lid tend to insure direct movement of the receptacle from one side of the fence to the other so as to automatically center the receptacle with respect to the lid, to permit the side and front edges to enter and the lid to effectually close the receptacle. With a receptacle of this character, that is one standing wholly within the fence, the householder will see that it is not overcharged, not only for sanitary reasons but to avoid the accumulation of garbage on his own property.
From the above description it will be apparent that I have produced a garbage receptacle embodying the features of advantage enumerated and I wish it to be understood that I reserve the right to make all changes properly falling withinthe spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
1. A fence provided with an opening and a top and bottom rail at the upper and lower ends respectively, of said opening, a cross bar bridging said opening at its upper end, a receptacle occupying said opening and sup ported upon the bottom rail of the fence and rovided with handles at its rear side overapping and bearing against the rear side of the fence, a lid hinged to the cross bar and closing said receptacle, and a spring-catch bearing against the rear wall of the receptacle at its lower end and adapted to be disengaged from the receptacle to permit the latter to be drawn outwardly through said opening.
2, A fence, provided with an opening and a top and bottom rail at the upper and lower ends respectively, of said opening, a cross bar bridging said opening at its upper end, a receptacle occupying said opening and supported upon the bottom rail of the fence and provided with handles at its rear side overlapping and bearing against the rear side of the fence, a lid hinged at its rear edge to the cross bar and closing said receptacle, and a spring-catch underlying and bearing against the rear wall of the receptacle and adapted to be depressed below the latter to permit the same to be withdrawn through said open- 111 3. A fence provided with an opening and a top and bottom rail at the upper and lower ends respectively, of said opening, a cross bar bridging said opening at its upper end, a receptacle occupying said opening and supported upon the bottom rail of the fence and provided with handles at its rear side overlapping and bearing against the rear side of the fence, and having its upper end inclined downwardly and forwardly, a lid hinged to said cross bar above the receptacle and provided at its front edge with a downwardly and rearwardly inclined edge and at its sides with downwardly and inwardly inclined edges, and springs tending to swing said lid downwardly and outwardly and cause it to automatically close the upper end of the receptacle.
4. The combination with a fence having a top and a bottom rail and an opening, and registering notches in the parts of the fence underlying said opening and communicating with the latter, a spring-catch secured to the bottom rail of the fence and projecting outwardly through said notches, a cross bar bridging the upper end of the opening at the outer side of the fence, a yieldingly-depressed lid carried by and projecting inwardly from said cross bar, and a receptacle occupying the opening and resting upon the bottom rail of the fence above said catch and having its rear wall bearing against the latter and having its open rear end closed by said lid and provided with a pair of handles at its rear side having their ends extended and adapted to bear against the outer side of the fence at opposite sides of said opening.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
PETER VJ. NICOLA.
