REGEPTACLE FOR GARBAGE AND SCRAP CANS Application filed December 2', 1921. Serial No. 519,505.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES E. TosoAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the village of Clarendon, in the county of Warren and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful 1m rovements in Receptacles for Garbage and crap Cans, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a speciiication. t
The invention relates to holders for garbage, and scrap cans; and the object of the improvement is to provide a closable can re{ ceptacle into which the garbage pail or scrap can can be set and quickly removed there-; from, said holder being provided with a hinged lid and link and lever attachment thereto so that the lid may be raised by foot pressure on said lever to empty garbage or scrap therein, the preferred cylindrical holder being provided with a vertical groove toreceive said link connection between the inner end of said lever and the under. side of the! lid or cover to raise the same, all of said parts being so designed that they can be 1 quickly and easily struck up from sheet metal; and the invention consists in the novel features and combinations hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top lan view of the holder or receptacle for gar age or scrap with the lid in the raised position; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of said holder with the lid in the closed position; and Fig. 3 is a" similar side elevation of said holder with the lid in the raised position. Fig. 4 is a crosswise sectional view, a portion of the lid being shown in the raised position, the garbage or scrap receptacle being shown in dotted outline in position within the holder. Fig. 5 is a sectional view with the lid in the closed position and the garbage or scrap receptacle in dotted outline.
Like characters of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views.
The numeral 10 designates the cylindrical holder or receptacle which is preferably made of sheet metal and has the lid 11 hinged thereto at 12.
The cylinder 10 is shaped with a vertical channel 13 at therear which is of sufficient depth to receive vertically therein the link a 14:, which link is pivotally attached at 15 to a lug or lugs 16 on the underside of the lid I 11 preferably immediately above the hinge 12 to strengthen that portion of the lid 11- and support the lugs 16.
The lower end of the link 14: is pivotally attached at 17 to, the inner end of the crosswise lever or pedal 18. The lever 18 is pivotally supported at 19 within a spaced downward return bend 20 in the crosswise bracing support 21 for the garbage or scrap receptacle 22, which crosswise bracing support 21 o is preferably attached at 23 and 24-to the opposlte inner walls of the cylinder 10.
' The crosswise lever or pedal 18 is pref metal and extends out through the slot 25 in the front wall of the sheet metal cylinder 10. The slot 25 is of suflicient length to permit the downward movement of the lever or pedal 18 a suflicient distance to raise the lid 11. The different positions of the pedal 18 are shown in Figs. 2 and 3' with the lid 11 in the raised and closed positions. A foot plate 26 is preferably provided on the outer end of the lever or pedal 18. The link 14 is also preferably channel-shaped and struck up from the sheet metal.
The lid 11 has the hinge 12 as stated, which hinge 12 is preferably attached to the 'erably channel-shaped, struck up from sheet rear side of the vertical channel portion 13.
The channel portion is cut low at its upper end as shown at 27, that is, beneath the levelof the upper end of the cylinder 10 so that the rim of the lid 11 may extend out over and below said top of the cylinder 10 and have suflicient room; for its movement from the horizontal to the vertical position. This arrangement also provides a strong hinging attachment 12 for thelid 11 and leaves room for the downwardly projecting lugs.
16 and suhicient room also for theattach ment of said lugs to the link 14 at 15 without entering into the inner area or circumference of the cylinder 10. Thisleaves sufficient room for the garbage or scrap can 22 without interference from said link 14: in raising and lowering the lid 11 by foot pressure on the double lever 18.
The vertical groove or channel 13 stiifens and strengthensthe cylinder 10 and should be of suficient depth to permit the free movement of the vertical link 14: in raising the lid 11 withoutsaid links entrance into the inner area of the cylinder 10,.thereby not interfering with the garbage or scrap receptacle 22. It is obvious that the cylindrical form of holder or receptacle for'the garbage can or pail for household uses or for a scrap can in factory use provides a strong, durable, easily and economically constructed holder which-may be struck up by means of suitable dies and which sets firmly on its support so that the lever 18 and link 14: work easily in raising the'lid 11.
The cross brace 21 is preferably shaped from a single strip of sufficiently heavy sheet metal to provide the central downward spacedmeturn bend 20, which not only pivotally supports the lever 18, but also forms a central leg or support for the cylinder 10, which cross brace 21 can be easily struck up by means of suitable dies. ,The
assemblage of the holder is simple and quickly and easily accomplished so that the entire receptacle or holder can be made at low cost.
What is claimed as new is: i
l. A receptacle for garbage comprising a garbage can and holder therefor, said holder consisting of a cylinder having a vertical channel in its rear side, a lid for saidcylinder hinged to said vertical channel portion, a crosswise brace in the lower portion of said cylinder, by which said can is supported, a'lever pivotally' attached to said cross- Wise brace, said lever extending from said vertical channel through the front of said cylinder to receive toot pressure thereon,
and pivotal link connection between the inner end of said lever and the under side of said lid in said channel.
2. A receptacle for garbage, comprising a garbage can and holder therefor, said holder consisting of a sheet metal cylinder shaped with a vertical channel opening in Wardly in its rear side, a diametral crossreceptacle and having a downward spaced.
return bend central of the same, a pedal lever pivotally supported in said downward return bend and extending out through said cylinder, the inner end of said pedal lever extending into said channel, a lid for said cylinder hinged to said channel portion, and a link connecting the inner end of said pedal lever and the under side of said lid to raise said lid by the downward movement of the outer end of said pedallever.
3. A. receptacle for garbage comprising a garbage can and a holder therefor, said holder consisting of a cylinder having a vertical channel in its rear side, which is less in height than said cylinder, a lid for said cylinder hinged to the rear-side of said vertical channel portion below the level of the upper end or said cylinder, at crosswise brace in the lower portion of said cylinder by which said can is supported, a pedal lever pivotally attached to said crosswise brace, and a link connecting the inner end of said pedal lever to said lid in said channel to raise said lid, said'cylinder having a slot in the front portion thereof for said pedal lever to extend out therethrough.
lln testimony whereof l have ailixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
' JAMUES- ETOSCAN; Witnesses t O. V, Swanson, 'llslnoi THOMAS Haas.
