MEANS FOR ADJUSTING THE WAISTBANDS OF GARMENTS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MILTON S. ERLANGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore City and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Adjusting the IVaistb ands of Garments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to a means for adjusting the waist bands of garments, and has for its object the provision of a device of this nature which will be simple in construction; efiicient and flexible in action; and one that can be easily applied to the waist bands of garments without requiring any serious alterations or changes therein.

To these ends my invention consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts more fully hereinafter disclosed and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which like numerals refer to like parts in all the views Figure 1, is a perspective view of a garment provided with my improvement. Fig. 2, a side elevational view of a waist band showing my invention in its extended condition. Fig. 3, a similar view showing my invention when the band is taken up or tightened. Fig. 4, a modification using only one adjuster and having the button fastened to the adjusting cord, and Fig. 5, an enlarged detail of Fig. 4.

1, represents any suitable garments, 2 and 2 the waist bands thereof, and 3, 3, suitable stays, flaps, or other fastenings attached to said waist band. Said flaps are preferably in pairs located on opposite sides of the garment, as shown in Fig. 1, although my invention is not limited to such pairs or location, and said flaps are preferably provided with suitable holes 4, as shown.

I when in their extended condition, as shown in Fig. 2, the portion 9 of waist band 2 between the flaps 3, may be likewise extended to its full length; but when one of the loops as 7, is pulled through the holes 4, and hooked over the button 5, as shown in Fig. 3, then a fold or crease 10 will be taken in the said band, and the space 9 shortened by one half the distance between the said button and holes. If another loop on the opposite side of the garment is slipped over its button, then the whole band is shortened by twice as much, or the full distance between the holes 4 and the button 5. If two loops 7 and 8 are slipped over the same button, then two folds l0 and 11 are made in the space 9, and the waist band correspondingly shortened on one side. If two loops on the other side of the garment are likewise slipped over their button, then the band is shortened to its maximum. If one loop is left free while the other three are taken over their buttons, We have still another adjustment.

In all cases, the attachment is flexible, does not interfere with the movements of the wearer, and by it the waist band is easily taken up and let out: When my improvement is applied to under garments, the loops of cords 6, maybe used to engage the suspenders to aid in holding up such garments as is now customary.

Of course, I do not wish to be understood as limiting my invention to the exact details of construction and operation above disclosed, since it is evident that both may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.

hat I claim is 1. A waist band adjuster for garments comprising a cord, and connecting parts through which said cord may slide; loops on said cord; and means secured to said cord over which said loops may be slipped, when said band is to be adjusted, substantially as described.

2. In a garment, the combination of a plurality of parts separated from each other and provided with holes; flexible means adapted to slide through said holes and provided with loops; and fastening means secured to said flexible means over which said loops are adapted to slip, substantially as described.

3. In a garment provided with a waist band, the combination of a pair of oppositely disposed stays spaced a art, secured to said bandand each provide with a plurality of holes, a flexible connection adapted to slide through said holes and provided with 100 s, and fastening means secured to said flexible connection and band intermediate of said stays over which the said loops are adapted to slip when said waist band is shortened.

4:. In a garment provided with a waist band, the combination of stays on opposite sides of said garment and each provided with a hole; a cord provided with a loop, one for each stay, adapted to slide through the holes of the same; and a button attached to each cord and to said band over which said loop may slip, substantially as described.

5. An under garment having a waist band, and said band provided with two pairs of oppositely disposed cloth stays sewed to the same; said pairs being located on opposite sides of said garment and each stay provided with a plurality of holes; said band also provided with a button between each pair of stays; and with aflexible cord for each pair of stays, one end of each of which at ter being secured to said band under said buttons passes through the holes in one of said stays, back to said buttons, then through the holes in the other of said stays,

and back to said buttons, thereby forming 100 s which may slide through said holes an be hooked over said buttons, substantially as described.

6. In a garment provided with a waist band, the combination of a pair of stays spaced apart, secured to said band and provided with holes; a flexible connection provided with loops adapted to slide through said holes; and fastening means located between the stays and secured to said connection and band, over which said loops may be slipped when moved toward said stays, substantially as described.
