PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES .C. SCOTT, OF ALEXANDRIA, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO NATHAN BOOTH, OF ALEXANDRIA, INDIANA.
COMBINED NECK AND EAR MUFFLER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 731,135, dated June 16, 1903.
Application filed January 20, 1903- $eria1 No. 139,799. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES C. SCOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alexandria, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented anew and useful Oombined Neck and Ear Muffler, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wearing-apparel designed to protect the neck, face, and ears, and has for its object the production of a device simple in construction and readily adaptable to the person of the wearer, which may be readily and quickly applied or removed; and the invention consists in certain novel features of the construction, as hereinafter shown and described, and specified in the claim.
In the drawings illustrative of the invention, in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, Figure 1 represents the device applied. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the device opened out viewed from the interior. Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic view of the device before it is folded into shape.
The improved device consists in a neck-' muffler portion,ear-muffier portions, and facemuftler portion, all in one single piece, preferably of knitted fabric and foldable into shape and adapted to protect the neck,-ears, and face or to protect the neck only, as may be required.
The form of the device is illustrated more fully in Fig. 3 before it is folded into shape, in which is shown an approximately rectangular sheet of material forming the neckmufller portion in two sections 10 11, foldable longitudinally along the dotted line 12, one section being connected at the ends 13 14 with fastening means, such as the ball-and'socket devices employed upon gloves and similar garments and indicated at 15, the neck-muffler portion when thus folded together and connected adapted to embrace the neck of the wearer and be fastened at the back.
Extending from the section 10 are the earmufller portions 16 17, and between these latter portions the face-protecting portion 18 extends and connectsthe ear-muffs. The ear-mufiier portions will be provided with an adjustable yieldable band 19, adapted to extend over the head of the wearer, the band being preferably of elastic material and provided with an adjusting-buckle 20 and hook.
and ring 21 to provide'for adapting thede- -vice to different-sized persons.
Anysuitable form of clasp or buckle may be employed, such as are in common use for garment-fasteners, and I do not, therefore, wish to be limited to any specific form of device employed for this purpose.
The garment may be formed of any suitable material, but will preferably be of knitted fabric of suitable thickness and texture to adequately protect the wearer, while at the same time being sufliciently yieldable to readily adapt itself to the person of the wearer and closely engage the neck, ears, and face. Any desired material may be employed, 110wever, and I do not wish to be limited to any specific material or materials.
The ends 13 14 of the sections 10 11 may be of any suitable material possessing sufficient strength to support the fastening means.
The free edge of the section 11 and the free edges of'the ear-muffler and face-muffler portions may be protected by binding, lif preferred.
This produces a very convenient and officient protection'to the neck, face, and ears of the wearer, as ind icated'inFigs. 1 and 2, easily applied and adjusted, and when formed of knitted fabric will readily adapt itself to the person. When the ear and face muffier portions are not required, they can be folded into the space between the sections 10 and 11 and the neck-muffler portion only used. This greatly increases the efficiency and value of the device and the comfort of the wearer. 7
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is' A single-piece extensible muffler comprising an approximately rectangular sheet of material folded longitudinally through the center thereof to form double neck-sections adapted to be opened to form a double-width muffler, one section having coacting fastening In testimony that I claim the foregoing as means'on its opposite ends and the other secmy own I have hereto affixed my signature in tion having spaced ear-muffs extending from the presence of two Witnesses.
the free edge thereof with a face-protector eX- JAMES G. SCOTT. 5 tending from said edge and connecting said Witnesses:
ear-muffs, and yieldable means for connecting A. F. HUBBERT,
said ear-muffs over the head of the wearer. H. KINGSTON.
