Application filed May 8, 1888. Serial No. 273,174. (No model.)
State of Minnesota, have invented a new and Y Improved Head-Protector, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 illustrates our invention applied for use, the protector being broken away to show the construction; and Fig. 2 is a detailed erspective view of the lower ring and one of the hinged arms or ribs.
This invention relates to a device to be worn upon the shoulders and around and over the head to protect the face and neck of the wearer from driving snow-storms and inclement weather generally; and the Object of the invention is such construction of the protector that it is adapted to be attached to and supported entirely from the shoulders of the wearer.
Another object is to so construct and combine the parts of the protector that when the top covering is removed the arms or ribs to which the outer web is attached may be turned down over the breast, shoulders, and back of the wearer.
The invention consists of the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
A represents a ring of sheet metal folded at the edges to form the ways a a. One end of the ring is provided with a buckle, b, and the other with a strap, 1), for securing the ring around the head of the wearer, as shown in Fig. 1. At each side the said ring A is provided with plates 0 0, formed with slots 0 c, and to these plates are secured the curved plates (1 d, provided with the curved shoulderplates f, adapted to be secured by straps f to the shoulders of the wearer. The slots 0' permit the plates 01 to be adjusted, and in the lower or outer ends of these plates are formed the slots 0 by which the curved shoulderplates f may be adjusted.
In the ways a a of the ring A are placed numerous sliding blocks,( to which are hinged the arms or ribs h. To these arms is secured the encircling web B, and also the top covering, O, each arm being provided with a button, 1', or other fastening device, for receiving and holding the said web and covering, as shown clearly in Fig. 1.
One edge of the web B is formed with the button-holesj, while the opposite edge is provided with corresponding buttons, so that the edges may be secured together, and the arms or ribs h nearest the ends of the rings A are each provided with a draw-string, k, by which the edges of the web may be drawn together or opened. \Vhen the top covering, i, is removed, the arms or ribs h and the web B may be turned down over the breast, shoulders, and back of the wearer out of the way.
Having thus described our invention, We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The head-protector herein shown and described, the same consisting of the ring A, sliding ribs or arms h, connected thereto, supports 0 d, shoulder-pieces f, and web and covering B C, substantially as described.
2. In a head-protector, the ring A, formed with ways a, in combination with the sliding plates g and the arms or ribs h, hinged thereto, substantially as described.
