EVAN T. STOVER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO JOSEPH STOVER AND GEORGE W. ROBERTS, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
FACE-PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part. of Letters Patent No. 331,339, dated December 1, 1885. Application filed November 10, 1884. Serial No. 147,473. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EVAN T. STOVER, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, and a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Iinprovement in Face-Protectors, of which the following is a full description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan, and Fig. 2 a section at line 00 of Fig. 1.
The chief object of my invention is to provide a face-protector for use in cold weather, having a suitable portion made of transparent material, so that the features of the wearer can be seen. Other objects are to combine, with such faceprotector, protection for the ears, to take the place of ear-muffs, and also to provide one or more openings for the, eyes, covered with suitable material to afford reasonable protection against dust and snow, which objects I accomplish as illustrated in the drawings.
In the drawings, A represents a piece of suitable flexible material, preferably rubber cloth, of suitable size to cover the face of the wearer. As shown, each side is provided with an extension, a, large enough to cover the ears. The central portion of this rubber cloth is cut away, leaving a large opening, the upper portion of which should be arranged so as to come over the eyes of the wearer, and this portion I cover with fine wire-cloth Z). The remainder of this opening is covered by a piece of mica, c.
The wire cloth and the mica can be conveniently secured to A by means of metal bands (1 0, one upon the outside and the other upon the inside of A, between which the edges around the opening and the mica and the wire-cloth can be secured in place either by rivets or by prongs upon one of the bands made to pass through A and clasp over the other metal band.
f is a strip of metal, which is, as shown, made integral with the band (I, extending from one side to the other at the point where the upper edge of the mica and the lower edge of the wire-cloth come together, and there is a similar strip of metal connected with the inner band, 6.
The protector may be provided with an opening for the mouth, with a flap, t, extending over the same, as shown in the drawings; or the flap may be omitted, as well as the opening for the month, if desired.
If desired, a small opening may be made in the part a, and be covered with fine wire-netting to facilitate hearing.
I thus provide a face-protector which does not completely conceal the features of the wearer, the same being provided with a lar e openin'g covered with a transparent material. I use mica preferably, because it is less liable to break than any other transparent material of which 1 have knowledge.
While my protector is primarily designed to be used in cold weather, it may be used for some other purposes to which it is adapted. The wire-gauze over the opening for the eyes will effectually protect the same against dust and snow.
Mica might be used over the eyes, instead of wirecloth; but it is desirable to have some ventilation, and the wire-cloth provides in part for that.
This protector, being made of flexiblematerial, can be folded in a comparatively small compass, and carried, if desired, in a suitable pocket or receptacle provided therefor.
The article can be secured on the head by suitable straps, (not shown in the drawings.)
As shown, the piece A is provided with a lining, It, which may be made of flannel or other suitable cloth.
hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A face-protector consisting of a flexible piece, A, having extensions a to cover the ears, and provided with one or more openings for the eyes, and with a central opening below the line of the eyes, covered by a transparent piece, 0, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. A face-protector consisting of a flexible piece, A, provided with one or more openings for the eyes, protected by wire-gauze b, in combination with a central transparent piece, 0, over an opening in A, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
EVAN T. STOVER.
