OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION 0F NEW JERSEY Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 24, 1916.
, Application tiled .T une 8, 1915. Beria1No.82,808.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, FRANCIS A. GUDGER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city of New York. county `and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Face-Shields, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a face shield which can be detachably secured at will in place on a hat brim.
As showing a specific embodiment of the invention reference is made to the drawing forming a part of` this specification, in which drawing- Figure 1 shows a hat with my improved face shield secured in place on the brim. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing a portion of the face shield and one of the clamps which are utilized to secure the shield to the hat brim. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 8 3 Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional viewtaken on the line 4--4 Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a view showing the construction of the body portion of the face shield where it is attached to the clamps.
The face shield'comprises the body A and three spring clamps B which detachably secure the face Lshield in place on the brim C of a hat. The body A is made up of a thin flexible strip D of transparent Celluloid which has a reinforcing band E secured to it along its marginal edge. This reinforcing band is preferably of celluloid which agrer may `not be transparent and it is I Achdir-ectly te the thin transparent sti-ip l) b'y'the application of heat and pressure so that the band and strip form a unitary structure.
From Fig. 3 it will be observed that the band E at the upper portion ofthe strip is somewhat wider than that portion of the band E which is atl the "side edges and bottom edge of #the stri The clamps B each comprise a pair of clamping jaws F which are forced towardclamping position and held together j means of the C-shaped spring G. These jaws have handles H whereby they, can be opened and closed at will. The body A has perforntions K extending through both the reinforcing band E and the strip D, and through these perforations the C-shaped spring G extends so that the clamps B, through the medium of said spring G, can serve as supports for the body A. The body A iskalso cut out or recessed at L above each of the perforations K to provide a space for receiving therein a portion of the lotver clamping jaw F, the position of the latter of which is indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 5. This allows the upper portion of the body A lto be brought close to the underside of the brim of the hat.
From a further 'inspection of Fig. 3 it will also be bserved that the clampsB are adjustable asia-Whole relative to the body A andcan readily adapt themselves relative to the body A so asto position themselves properly to clamp the brim of the hat without distorting the latter.
The face 'shield shown is particularly adapted to be secured upon the brms of hats, such asare worn by ladies when automobiling. It is for the purpose of protecting the face of the wearer when automobilinthat this shield was constructed.
he improvements herein Set forth are not limited to the-precise construction and arrangement shown and described, as they may be embodied in various forms and modifications Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What I claim is:
l. A face shield comprising a transparent strip of material having at its upper edge portion spring clamps for securing the transparent strip i'n place below a hat brim, the spring of each of said clamps passing through the upper portion of the transparent strip and serving as the medium through which the strip is supported by said clamps. which clamps' are adjustable as a whole relative to said strip.
2. A face shield comprising a body and spring clamps for supporting the same, said body being formed of a strip of transparent celluloid and a reinforcing band of celluloid secured to the strip along its marginal edge, each of the clamps having a member that passes through the upper portion of said strip and that portion of the band extending along the upper edge of said strip whereby the body can be directly supported rom said clamps, said clamps being adjustable as a whole relative to said body.
3. A face shield comprising a strip of transparent Celluloid having along its margine reinforcing band of Celluloid which is secured directly to the Celluloid strip, and
to the transparent strip spring clamps having members which pass reinforcing ba'nd, said clamp that the clamps can bc attached to a hat .br1n.
4. A face shield comprising in combinav tion a iiexible" strip of transparent material and a plurality of spring clamping means for securing the flexible strip to a hat brim, said clamping means each being adjustable relative to the fiexible strip whereby the clamping means can be properly positioned to be attached to a hat brim.
5. A face shield comprising a flexible strip of transparent Celluloid having secured along its marginal edge a reinforcing band and three spring clamps located along thel upper portion of the celluloid strip for se curing the shield to the brim of a hat, each clamp being adjustable relative to the ilexible strip of transparent celluloid so that the clamps can bc properly. positioned for securing to a hat. y
G. `-face shield consisting of a body and spring clamps for detachably securing said body to the brim of a hat, said body comprising a transparent strip of Celluloid in such a manner' which is reinforced along its marginal edge by a band of celluloidvthat is secured directly to said strip. theclagnps each comprisingr a pair of jaws that"'are forced toward clamping positionv by C-shaped springs, each of said springs passing through a perforation which `is in the body so that the latter can be supported by said springs.
7. A `face shield consisting of -a body and spring clamps for supporting the body, said body comprising a transparent strip of Celluloid which is bound by a reinforcing band of celluloid that is secured to the transparent strip, the body being also provided with perforations and recessed portions located above the perforations, the spring clumps each comprising a pair of clamping.;` jaws and a C-shaped spring for forcing said jaws toward each other, which spring enters one of said perfor-ations, each of said rccesse portions being of suiiicient length to re eii` a lower clamping jaw.
