BELT-BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 739,645, dated September 22, 1903. 7
Application filed October 15, 1902.
Be it known that I, JULIUS L. Bnowsn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Belt- Buckle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. r
The object of the invention is to provide a newand improved belt-buckle more especially designed for use on ladies belts and arranged to allow convenient adjustment for properly fitting the waist of the wearer and to permit of giving any desired dip to the front of the belt.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a rear perspective view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 2. 2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a rear perspective view of the improvement, showing the hinged clamping member in an open position.
The improved belt-buckle consists, essentially, of a front A, preferably in the shape of an ornamental plate and provided at its rear face with clamping members B and G for clamping the free crossed ends D D of a belt D between the members, as hereinafter more fully described.
The clamping member B is in the form of a fiat straight bar disposed vertically and fixed to the front A, at the rear face thereof, at or near the middle, as plainly indicatedin the drawings, and the other clamping memher 0 is in the shape of a U-shaped bar hinged at its middle in an eye E, secured or formed on the front A directly above the upper end of the clamping member B, as plainly. shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The sides of the sides of the clamping member B when the clamping member 0 is in a closed position, as shown in Fig. 2. The free ends of the sides Serial No. 127,354. (No model.)
of the clamping member 0 are adapted to be swung into open catches F, secured on the rear face of the front'A, near the bottom thereof, the said catches serving to hold the clamping member 0 locked in .a closed position. Now in using the buckle the ends D and D of the belt are crossed, as shown in Fig. 1, and piaced in this position upon the rear face of the front A at the time the clamping member O is in an open position, and when the belt has been drawn tight around the wearers waist and the desired dip is given to the belt at the front by crossing the ends D and D at more or less of an angle then the wearer swings the clamping member 0 into a closed position, so as to clamp the ends D and D between the clamping member B and the sides of the clamping member 0, as plainly indicated in Fig. 1, and presses the free ends into the open catches F, so as to hold the clamping member 0 in a locked position.
The belt-buckle described is very simple and durable in construction, can be cheaply manufactured and readily applied, at the same time allowing convenient adjustment of the belt according to the size of the waist, and permitting of giving a desired dip to the front of the belt. It is expressly understood that the belt itself is not permanently fastened at one of its ends to the buckle, as is the case with most belts and buckles now in use.
Having thus described my invention, I claimas new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Abelt-buckle, comprising a front; a central vertical clamping-bar'fixed on the rear face of the front and extending outwardly at a right angle thereto; a U-shaped clampingbar hinged at its middle on the rear face of the front at a point opposite one'end of the fixed vertical bar, and extending with its sides approximately parallel with eachother on opposite sides of said fixed clamping-bar; and catches on the rear face of the front adj acent the other endof said vertical bar to be engaged by the free ends of the sides of the hinged clam ping-bar; the part of the belt to be secured together passing over the vertical bar and under the sides of the U-shaped clamping-bar, whereby a sharp bend is imbar, its catches being adapted to engage the free ends of the U-shaped clamping-bar, as specified and for the purpose set forth.
3. A belt-buckle, comprising a front, and a clamping device; said clamping device consisting of three members each separately secured to the rear face of the front and consisting of a centrally-disposed vertical bar, a
U-shaped clamping-bar hinged at its middle on the rear face of the front at one end of said vertical bar and extending with its sides on opposite sides of said vertical bar; and a catch member secured to said front at the other end of said vertical bar; its catches being adapted to engage the free ends of the U- shaped clamping-bar; said U-shaped clamping-bar being normally disposed in a plane nearer to the rear face of said front than that occupied by the outer edge of the vertical bar, whereby to impart a bend to the portions of the belt which it engages.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JULIUS L. BROWER.
