(NovMvodel.) Y
J. L. HBPFBRNAN. COVER FOR SADDLBS.
No.. 426,934. Patented Apr. Z9, 1890.
UNITED ASTATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES-LOUIS HEFFERNAN, OF NEWCOMB,`TENNESSEE.
COVER FOR sADDLEs.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Iatent No. 426,934, dated April 29, 1890.
Application led December 16, 1889. Serial No. 333,877. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, JAMES LoUIs I-IEEEER- NAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newcomb, in the county of Campbell and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Saddles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in saddle covers or protectors; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures l and 2 are perspective views showing my cover in position on a saddle, and showing it extended and folded, respectively. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the cover removed, and Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views of different forms of the cover.
My improved cover A is constructed of any water-proof fabric-such as rubber, oiled silk, or thin oiled leather-which can be easily rolled into a compact form. The cover may be of any desired size, and it is of a proper form to iit neatly upon and extend entirely over the saddle to which it may be applied, having the seat portion B and the side iiaps C depending from the edges of said seat portion, as shown. In the seat portion, at the rear edge of the sameI form the gore D, thereby providing a pocket E, which engages over the rear end of the saddle to retain the cover thereon, and at the front end of the cover I secure the short strap F, by means of which the cover may be secured permanently to the saddle. It may sometimes be preferred to alter this arrangement by placing the strap at the rear end and forming the pocket at 4the front end of the saddle, and such a change is an obvious one and entirely within the scope of my invention. On the edge of the side iiaps C, near the lower ends of the same, I provide the snap -hooks or spring-catches G, which engage the edges of the saddle-flaps, and thereby secure the aps of the cover in place, and above these snaps I arrange the straps H, which are secured to the saddle and extend over the ends of the cover when it is rolled so as to hold it in a compact bundle and prevent the ends from iarino. Greases I are formed in the cover,
near the lower ends of the iiaps, and at the edges of the seat portion, to indicate the lines on which the cover may be folded when not in use. l
In Fig. 4 I have illustrated a cover especially adapted for side-saddles. This cover 6o is of the same general feature as that shown in the other figures, but has only one side ap, and has a slightly-diiferent arrangement of straps and catches, in order to accommodate it to the different shapes of the saddle.
In Fig. 5 I have shown a plain oblong cover, which may be' extended over any form of saddle.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, 7o it will be seen that I have provided a very simple cover for saddles, by the use of which the saddle will be effectually protected from dust, rain, or heavy dews when unoccupied. The cover is attached to the saddle, so as to be carried by it, and when the saddle is occupied the cover lis folded, as shown in Fig.
2, thus assuming a compact form and occupying a very little room. When the rider dismounts, the coverl is extended and secured 8o over the saddle, as shown in Fig. l, andabove described, thus preventing the saddle being injured or rendered unfit for use by dust or rain collecting thereon.
Instead of straps, I may use strings or other fastenings to hold the cover in a roll on the saddle.
My improved cover is very cheap and simple, and its advantages are thought to be ob- VOUS. 9o
I-Iavin'g thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, Is-
A removable cover for riding-saddles, composed of a foldable water-proof fabric having 9 5 a seat portion adapted to cover theseat of the saddle, and provided with a pocket at one edge to engage the end of the saddle, a strap at the opposite edge of the said seat portion, side flaps depending from the side edges of the los seat portion, and securing straps and hooks around the edges of the side flaps, as setforth.`
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES LOUIS HEFFERNAN.
IVitnesses:
ELIAS DoUGLAss, REUBEN SMIDDY.
