LATE-HOLDER.
Application filed February 18, 1908.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that we, JEssE F. PRESBA and Hanna L. PRESBA, citizens of the United States, residing at I-Iolyoke, in the county of Phillips and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lath-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Our invention relates to a device adapted to be attached to the person for supporting laths or other articles.
The object of the invention is to provide a lath holder of this character which may be easily adjusted to fit different sized people and in which the load will be suspended so that a large number of laths or the like may be conveniently carried and the arms of the wearer will be free so that he may nail the laths upon the ceiling and also the side walls.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved lath holder; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the same; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the plane indicated by the line 83 in Fig. 2; and Fig. 1 is a detail horizontal section taken on the plane indicated by the line l-4: in Fig. 2.
The holder comprises a frame 1 preferably made adjustable and adapted to be attached to the person by shoulder pieces 2 and a body strap 3, the frame being provided with curved arms 4, or other suitable means for supporting the laths or other articles. The frame 1, as illustrated, comprises two upright or side members 5, 6 adjustably united by upper and lower connecting members 7, 8, said members being preferably composed of metal strips, as clearly illustrated. The upper portions of the upright members 5, 6 may be curved and bowed as indicated and their lower ends are bent substantially at right angles to provide outwardly projecting horizontal portions 9, which latter terminate in the curved load holding or supporting arms 4. The outwardly projecting portions 9 are strengthened by inclined braces 10, which latter have their upper ends riveted or otherwise secured to the vertical upper portions of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 12, 1909.
Serial No. 416,570.
upright members and their lower ends similarly secured to the outer ends of said portions 9, as more clearly shown in Fig. 2. The frame 1 is made adjustable in width so that it can be worn by diflerent sized persons, by uniting the connecting members 7, 8 to the upright members by bolts 11, 12 and by forming in said connecting members, adjacent to their ends, longitudinal series of apertures 13, 14s to receive said bolts 11, 12.
The bolts 11 which unite the upper connecting member to the upright or side memhere are provided upon their outer threaded ends with winged nuts 15 and similar nuts 16 are provided upon the corresponding ends of the bolts 12, which latter unite the lower connecting member to said upright or side members. Both of the members 7, 8 are preferably curved longitudinally but the upper member 7 is of less length than the lower member 8 so that the top portion of the frame is of less width than its bottom portion. The lower connecting member 8 has suitably secured to one of its ends the body belt or strap 3 and to its other end a buckle 17 with which the free end of the strap is engaged after being passed around the waist of the wearer. Any other suitable means, other than the buckle 17, may be provided for adjusting the belt or strap 3. The shoulder pieces 2 are in the form of U-shaped straps provided upon their lower faces with suitable cushions 18 which bear upon the shoulders of the wearer. The outer ends of said shoulder pieces are curved outwardly, as shown at 19, and their inner ends 20 are connected to the top of the frame 1, preferably by the bolts 11. Said shoulder pieces are also preferably made adjustable so that the frame may be supported at the desired height upon the body of the wearer, by forming in their ends 20 longitudinal series of apertures or openings 21, through any of which the bolts 11 may be passed to both pivotally and adjustably unite the shoulder pieces to the frame.
22 denotes a nail holder which may be attached to either side of the frame 1 and which consists of a receptacle or cup 23 for the nails and an attaching arm 21, which latter is connected to one of the horizontal portions 9 of the frame by a bolt 25 passing through said arm and an aperture 26 in said portion 9. The receptacle or cup 23 is preferably of rectangular shape and constructed justed to fit the person who is to wear it,
by adjusting the side pieces 5, 6 toward or from each other or angularly with respect to each other and by raising or lowering the shoulder pieces 2. The device is then applied to the person by resting the frame against the body, engaging the shoulder pieces 2 with the shoulders, and adjusting the strap 3 around the waist. The laths are placed across the curved arms 4 which support them and the nails are placed in the cup or holder 22.
The use of the device effects a great saving in time, labor, and strength, since a large number of laths may be supported within convenient reach of the wearer, whose arms are entirely free, to enable him to nail the laths upon ceilings and also upon side walls.
It will be noted that the device is light, strong, durable, comparatively inexpensive to produce and easy to adjust and to either apply or remove from the person.
While we have shown and described in detail the preferred embodiment of our invention it will be understood that we do not wish to be limited to the precise construction set forth and that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described our invention what weclaim is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a frame having rigid upright members with their lower ends bent to provide the outwardly projecting horizontal portions 9 and the curved supporting arms upper portions of said members, rigid connecting members uniting said upright members, and means for fastening the frame to the person.
