To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PAUL PRINCE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harrah, in the county of Oklahoma and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knee- Rests for Cotton-Pickers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in knee rests, and particularly to knee rests which are adapted for use by cotton pickers or others who crawl on the knees while at labor.

An object of this invention is the provision of a knee rest which consists of a frame including a base and resilient side walls, the side walls supporting a pad to receive the knee, the pad being spaced from the base of the support, whereby a resilient knee rest is provided.

A further object of this invention is the provision of a knee rest comprising a supporting frame which consists of a base having resilient side walls formed integrally therewith, the base also having a front wall hingedly connected thereto, the side walls of the frame supporting a pad which receives the knee, the pad being provided with a forwardly extending tongue which is connected at its free edge to the upper edge of the hinged front wall of the frame, means being provided to detachably connect the rest to the knee.

With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,

Referring more particularly to the drawing, the rest comprises a resilient metallic supporting frame which includes an elongated base 1 which is provided with reduced upturned side walls 2, the walls having elongated transversely extending heads 3 at their upper ends, whereby the side walls are substantially T-shaped in form..

Hingedly connected to the forward end of the plate 1 is a front wall 4 which is also provided with an enlarged transversely extending head 5 at its upper end, whereby the front wall is T-shaped in form. A supporting flexible leather pad 6 which is substantially U-shaped in cross-section is riveted adjacent the upper edges of its sides to the enlarged heads 3 of the side walls of the frame, the pad having a forwardly extending tongue 7 which is also riveted adjacent its outer end to the enlarged head 5 of the front wall 41. The inner face of the pad is preferably provided with a facing of felt which is adapted to present a soft surface to the knee. Connected at one end to the upper edge of one side wall of the pad, adjacent its inner end, is a fastening strap 9 which is adapted for adjustable engagement with the buckle 10 on the upper edge of the other side wall of the pad, the strap 9 being adapted for engagement around the calf of the leg below the knee to secure the pad against the knee. Connected to one side edge of the tongue 7, adjacent its forward end, is another fastening strap 11 which is adapted for engagement with a buckle 12 on the other side edge of the tongue, the strap 11 being adapted for engagement around the thigh above the knee so that the rest is securely fastened to the leg to engage over the knee.

In the practical use of my device, the pad 6 is engaged around the knee, the T- heads 3 of the side walls of the frame being disposed on opposite sides of the knee so that the strap 9 may be readily passed around the calf of the leg below the knee, and connected to the buckle 10. It will be seen that the hinged front wall 4 of the frame is moved inwardly to engage the tongue 7 of the pad against the leg above the knee, whereupon the strap 11 will be passed around the leg and connected to the buckle 12. By reason of the hinged connection of the front wall 4 to the base, it will be understood that the person wearing the knee rest may rise to a standing position, as the front wall 4 of the frame is hinged to the base plate and will be capable of a slight movement to allow straightening of the leg. As the pad 6 is spaced from the base 1 of the frame, and the frame is constructed of resilient metal, the pad provides a resilient support for the knee as the side walls of the frame will give as heavy weight is imposed upon the pad when the base is engaged against the ground.

Having thus fully described my invention, What I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A device of the character described comprising a frame including a base having reduced upturned resilient side Walls, said side Walls having enlarged heads at their upper ends, a front Wall having an enlarged head at its upper end hingedly connected to the base, a pad secured adjacent its side edges to the enlarged heads of said side Walls, said pad having a forwardly extending tongue secured adjacent its forward edge to the upper head of the front wall, and means secured to the pad and to said extension for securing the device to a knee.

2. A knee rest for cotton pickers or the like comprising a frame including a base having upstanding resilient side Walls, a front Wall hingedly connected to the forward end of said base, a pad substantially U-shaped in cross-section connected adjacent its opposite side edges to the upper ends of the side Walls, said pad having a for- Wardly extending tongue secured adjacent its forward edge to the upper end of said front Wall, the intermediate portion of said pad being spaced above the base of said frame, and means for securing the rest to the knee.
