CAR-STRAP.

To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT T. JOHNSON, a citizen of Sweden, residing at Stratford, in the county of VFairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Im` proveniente in Car-Straps, of which the following is a specification.

rihis invention is an improved car strap for use on street cars, railroad cars, or other kind of cars engaged in carrying passengers in public service and for use by standing passengers, one object of the invention being` to provide an improved strap of this kind embodying a V-shaped hanger and brace which prevents the handle portion of the strap from swaying longitudinally of the car and thereby greatly promotes the comfort and safety of the user; another object of the invention being to provide an improved car strap embodying a pair of handle'members of unequal length and arranged for use by persons of different heights.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.

My improved car strap is Y-shaped and comprises an upper, V-shaped hanger and brace member 1 and a lower, handle member 2 vwhich is secured to and depends from the hanger and brace member. The hanger and brace member is doubled and folded at the center, as at 3, and its downwardly converging arms t, which are thus formed, are doubled and secured at their upper ends to form loops 5 through which a supporting rod 6 passes, said supporting rod being secured by any suitable means under the roof of the car and being ar ranged longitudinally thereof, so that thc hanger and brace member is also arranged longitudinally of the ear and prevents the handle member from swaying longitudinally of the car and thus greatly promotes the comfort and safety of the user. The strap can also be attached to the car by means of Specification of Letters Patent.

any form of metal hanger which may be found suitable by a manufacturer of diifen ent makes of cars and any suitable means may be substituted for the supporting rod if desired. A series of my improved straps may be arranged, as shown in Fig. l, or they may be used at spaced intervals as may be preferred. To prevent the loops 5 from sliding on the rod 6 I secure the said loops to the rod by means of clamps 10, which in practice may be strips of wood or other suitable material arranged across the loops and secured to the upper side of said rodby means of screws or other suitable fastening elements. The rod may be however dispensed with within the scope of my invention and the loops may be passed through the eyes of metal hangers which depend directly from the car roof. Any suitable means may be provided for securing my car straps and l would have it understood that I am not limited in this particular. The handle member 2 comprises a strap which is doubled at a point intermediate its ends but at unequal distance from the ends, the bight 7 of the handle strap being passed over the doubled lower portion 3 of the member l and being secured thereto as by means of rivets 8 or other suitable fastening means. The hanger member by being doubled diagonally at the center permits the arms to lie in face to face contact at their point of juncture, thus providing maximum strength at the connection between said member and handle where it is most desirable. The end portions of the handle strap are also doubled to form loops 8, 9 of unequal length, the ends of the strap 2 being secured also to the member l by the before mentioned fastening means. The handle loops, being of unequal length, are adapted for use, respectively, by persons of ordinary height or short persons.

While I have herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, I would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

l. A Y-shaped car strap comprising a hanger and brace member doubled diagonally at the center to form downwardly converging arms, and a handle member secured to the doubled central portion of the hanger and brace member and depending therefrom.

2. A Y-shaped car strap comprising a hanger and brace member doubled diagonally at the center to form downwardly converging arms, and a handle member secured to the doubled central portion of the hanger and brace member and depending therefrom, said handle member being doubled and the bight thereof passing over the doubled portion of the hanger and brace member.

3. A Y-shaped car strap comprising a hanger and brace member doubled diagonally at the center to form downwardly converging arms, and a handle member secured to the doubled central portion of the hanger and brace member and depending` therefrom, said handle member being doubled and the bight thereof passing over the doubled portion of the hanger and brace member, and said handle member having end loop portions of unequal length.

4. A car strap comprising a hanger and brace member folded at its center to form downwardly converging arms, said arms at their fold lying in face to face contact, a handle member, said handle being doubled and embracing' the fold of said hanger and brace member, and means for securing said points together.
