TOURISTS HARNESS OR PACK-BAG.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Axnn W. CARLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residin at Ely, in the county of St. Louis and tate of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Tourists Harness or Pack-Bag, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to pack bags or harness for use by tourists and one of the objects of the invention is to provide a commodious bag mounted in a novel manner whereby the same can be comfortably carried upon the back and readily adjusted to lit different persons.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.

In said drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, a portion of the bag being broken away. Fig. 2 is an enlarged section through one of the corn nections between the bottom of the bag and the shoulder strap. Fig. 3 is a section on line A Fig. 1.

Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a short straight top strip of the frame of the device, and this strip is connected, by means of downwardly diverging curved strips 2, with the bowed bottom strip 3 of the frame. The connecting strips 2 are shaped so as to fit snugly against the back at the shoulders and above the waist and each of the strips is preferably rounded transversely so as to cause no discomfort to the user of the device. Slots 1 are formed in the end portions of the bottom strips 3 and a series of openings 5 is formed in each of the connecting strips 2, there being a cord 6 threaded through the openings 5 in each strip and designed to be utilized for the purpose of holding upon the frame such packages as cannot be inserted into the bag hereinafter referred to.

The bag used in connection with the frame may be made of any suitable fabric or of light leather and has been indicated at 7. This bag is preferably formed with lnserted side pieces 8 which increase in width toward their lower ends and eyelets 9 are arranged in the upper or open end portion of the bag and receive a drawing string 10. Tabs 11 are riveted or otherwise secured to the bottom of the bag adjacent the sides thereof and each of the tabs carries a buckle 12. Said buckle is adapted to be engaged by a short strap 13 insertible through one of the slots 4: and carrying a ring 14., the strip 3 being interposed between the ring and the buckle 12. Each of the rings 14 is adapted to be engaged by one end of a shoulder strap 15, said strap carrying a buckle 16 to which the terminal thereof may be secured. The two shoulder straps which are connected in this manner to the bottom of the bag at opposite sides thereof, converge upwardly toward the center of the top of the frame and are provided at their upper ends with integral loops or eyes 17 through which extend the holding rod 18. This bowed holding rod has terminals bent forward and attended through openings in the strips 2. The front ends of these terminal portions engage an arcuate tie plate 19 which is fastened on the strips 2 by upsetting the terminals of the rod 18. Shoulder pads 20 may be mounted on the straps 15, each of these pads being preferably in the form of a broad leather strip having cross straps 21 cut therefrom and which engage the shoulder straps 15 so as to permit the pads to slide along the straps 15.

Leather loops or rings 22 are connected to the upper end of the bag 7 in any suitable 'manner, as by means of rivets or the like and these loops extend around the top strip 1 at points between the strips 2. A closure flap 23 extends from the back of the bag 7 at the top thereof and has a strap 24: at its free end which may engage a suitable buckle not shown for the purpose of fastening the flap in closed position. One or more pockets 25 may be arranged within the bag.

In using the device herein described the articles to be carried are placed within the bag and the drawing string 10 is then pulled so as to close the upper end of the bag as much as possible. The flap 23 is then secured in closed position after which any articles which cannot be placed within the bag may be fastened between the strips 2 and the bag' by means of the cord 6. The strap 15 can then be adjusted longitudinally to fit the person who is to carry the bag and the arms of said person are then inserted between the strips 2 and the strap 15 so as to cause the pads 20 to rest upon the shoulders. The strips 2, by reason of their peculiar shape, will fit snugly against the back of the carrier and the entire device can thus be carried Without causing discomfort.

It is of course to be understood that various changes may be made in theconstru'ction and arrangement of the parts Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of-t he invention.

Vhat is claimed is A device of the class described including 2t frame shaped to conform to the back of a person, said frame including top and bottom strips having their terminals extended lateral-1y; there being openings in the end portion-of the bottom strip, a bag suspended from the top strip, connecting devices loosely In order that the arcuate'p late 19 and the I mounted in the openings in the bottom strip and detachably secured to the bag, a holding nodsecu-red to the upper portion of the frame, a tie deviceengaging the terminals of the rod, a brace connected to and interposed between said tie device and rod, and shoulder straps secured to the rod and detaohably secured to the connecting devices at the bottom of the frame.
