Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed July 6, 1914. Serial N 0. 849,312.
the carrying of the accoutrementsand theammunition without serious inconvenience to the wearer and with little or no abnormal strain on the material of the coat.
Hitherto military accoutrements have been attached to an equipment placed upon the soldiers shoulders on the outside of the tunic or coat and secured thereto by buttons or other suitable fastening devices, and the ammunition has been carried on a separate belt or device worn outside the tunic or coat. Such equipment is difficult to put on and off and is cumbersome and clumsy in use especially in wet weather when the material becomes sodden and consequently heavier.
According to this invention a yoke is secured to the coat and on the inside thereof by suitable stitching being preferably made up with the coat. The yoke is made of some stout material such as jean or strong linen or canvas and is connected by strips stitched to the forepart to a wide strengthening strip of the same material at the waist of the coat across each forepart. On the outside the coat is furnished with one or more straps on each forepart at the waist and secured to the coat and to the strengthening strip in such a manner as to form a series of vertically arranged loops each of which is adapted to carry an ammunition receptacle of the kind described in my copending application, Serial No. 849,311.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanyin g drawings wherein Figure 1 shows an inside view of a military coat with my invention applied thereto; and Figs. 2 and 3 are front and back views of the coat with field service accoutrements and ammunition in position. Fig. 4; is a side elevation of the coat shown in Fig. 2, partly in section. H
In these drawings A represents the yoke which is shaped to fit the wearers shoulders and is secured by stitching or otherwise in position on the inside of the coat as shown in Fig. 1.
D D represent wide strengthening strips secured at the waist of the coat and 011 the inside thereof one across each forepart C. The transverse strengthening strips D D are supported from the yoke A by means of longitudinal connecting strips B B stitched or otherwise firmly secured to the yoke, to the foreparts, and to the strengthening strips D D. To each side of the yoke is secured one end of a strap A which is preferably bound along its edges with a strengthening edging of whalebone or the like A and is passed through anaperture in the material of the coat to the outside thereof to serve for the purpose of supporting the knapsack E in position on the shoulders by means of the knapsack straps and buckles E and E as shown in Fig. 2. By this method of attaching the straps of the knapsack to an attachment on the front edge of the yoke a direct pull and a perfect balance of the knapsack on the shoulders are obtained.
F F represent the straps on each forepart at the waist which are secured at each end by stitching 7 through the material of the fore part on to the strengthening strips D. Each of said straps is also secured to the forepart and to the strengthening strip by the vertical rows of stitching 7 which are so arranged as to divide each strap into a series of vertically arranged open loops, each loop being adapted to receive and carry an ammunition receptacle G; two only of such receptacles are placed on each lower strap F so as to show the stitching f dividing the loops. Obviously any convenient number of loops or divisions may be made in the straps F according to the size of the ammunition receptacles or of the coat or the strength of the wearer.
H H represent straps which are secured. by hooks to D-shaped eyes H on the front of the coat and to similar eyes on the back of the coat under the knapsack. These straps H carry the water bottle J and haversack K suspended by rings.
L represents a bag carrying the head of an intrenching tool secured, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 3, by hooks and eyes to the back of the coat underneath the water bottle and haversack.
M represents the bayonet sheath or scab.- loard, and N the handle of the intrenching tool, both of .which are passed through the rear loops F on the lowermost straps F. The straps F on the forepart are preferably bound along the top edge with leather or other strengthening material as shown at F in Fig. 2. All the devices for attaching the accoutrements are secured to the outside of the coat, being stitchedthrough the material of the coat on to the yoke A or strengthening strips D as the case may be.
y my invention simplicity and lightness are obtained, and the complication of straps and the cumbersome character of the present method of carrying the accoutrements and ammunition are avoided.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In combination with a military coat of the character described, having two fore-parts Eepies of this patent may be obtained for and .a back part, a yoke extending across the shoulders above the arm-holes troni one of said fore-parts to the other and stitched .to the upper parts of the two fore-parts and to the back part, two transverse strengthenmg strips secured to the inside of the garment, straps secured to said strips and to the ends of the yoke and the fore parts and ver- CHARLES JOSIAH ROSS.
