A. MENDEL.
MEANS FOR CARRYING KNAPSAGKS.
' Patented Dec. -7, 1886.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED MENDEL, OF STIEHLEN, NEAR DRESDEN, SAXONY,GERMANY.
MEANS FOR CARRYING KNAPSACKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 353,874, dated December 7, 1886.
Application filed July 8, 1886. Serial No. 207,485. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALFRED MENDEL, of Stiehlen, near Dresden, Kingdom of Saxony, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Carrying Knapsacks, of which the following is a specification.
In my patent for means for carrying knapsacks, No. 292,566, dated January 29, 1884, I have shown and described a device for supporting the knapsack, which device is connected to and supported by the coat.
My present improvement relates to a means for carrying a knapsack, which consists in a waistcoat or corset having straps to connect the same to the person of the wearer and straps for carrying a basket and vessel or bundle of luggage, upon which the lower edge of the knapsack rests, and by which a portion of its weight is carried.
Instead of connecting the knapsack to the coat, I use a waistcoatfront or partial garment, to which the knapsack is connected.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is the partial garment, called the waistcoat or corset, which may be fastened to the body by the neckstrap a,- and by the waist-straps b, at proper places, the straps c are fastened to this waistcoat, which straps are intended to hold, by means of buckles, rings, or hooks, the knapsack-bearer.
In Fig. 2 the waistcoat-front is shown as made of two pieces, and either united in front by strings or, as in Fig. 3, by straps In Fig. 4 the knapsack-bearer is shown,
sack is distributed upon the back, chest, and hips, instead of being carried alone by the back.
My waistcoat or corset is made either in one piece, as seen in Fig. l, or in two pieces that are connected by lacing or by straps and buckles, as in Figs. 2 and 3, and said waistcoat is designed to cover the front portion of the body from the waist to the shoulders.
Astrap, a, passing around the neck, and a strap, b, around the waist, serve to hold the waistcoat in place. The straps c, with rings, hooks, or buckles upon their ends, are connected to the waistcoat or corset, and from them the basket of straps e is supported, and a field-kettle, d, or other vessel or luggage, is held within the basket of straps, and upon said field-kettle or luggage d the lower part of the knapsack rests, and part of its weight is thussupported.
It is evident that the basket of straps e and field-kettle d may be substituted by any device that is properly connected to the waistcoat, and will act as a support for the knapsack and accomplish the purpose of distributing 1h weight over different parts of the body.
I claim as my invention 1. As a means for carrying a knapsack, a waistcoat or corset coming over the chest, straps for securing the same upon the person of the wearer, and a support secured to said straps, and upon which the knapsack rests, substantially as-set forth.
2. The combination, in a knapsack-support, of a waistcoator corset, a neck-strap, a, waiststrap 1), side strap, 0, basket of straps e, and a support within said basket, and upon which the knapsack can rest, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALFRED MENDEL.
