Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GUsrAvn W. HAAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles, and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jury and Jury- Frames for Orthopedic Treatment; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same. reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the figures and letters of reference marked thereon.

This invention relates to the class of mechanical appliances used in the treatment of bodily deformities, being more especially designed for straightening the spine and back and it has for its object to provide an apparatus or so-called jury and frame which shall be self-contained, and portable and which will require the least amount of skill to use.

The invention consists in certain novel details of construction and combination and arrangements of parts, all as willbe now described and the particular features of novelty pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the inventionFigure 1 is a perspective view of a jury and jury frame embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation.

The frame as a whole is mounted upon a base or support A, preferably wood, which forms a seat for the patient, being upholstered or cushioned to provide ease and comfort. Said frame consists of metal bars or standards B, one at each side of the base, having bent portions 2) at the lower ends, which extend beneath the base A from the rear through which pass screws or other fastening means for securing the standards to the base. These standards diverge outwardly at the top to form a wide top, and at their upper ends are bent to form forwardly extending portions 6, which in turn are bent at the end to form depending portions 6 The standards B are suitably braced by bars C, secured at their lower ends to the base A and at their upper ends to the standards B, braces D being also employed between braces C and portions 6 of standards B. Cross bars 5 and b are secured to the top portion 6 of the frame at front and rear. The several parts constituting the frame are preferably secured together by means of screws so that the frame may be easily dismantled for storage or transportation and readily set up when desired.

The jury used in connection with the frame described consists of traction elements for the head and shoulders consisting of a sling E for the head and loops or slings F through which the arms are passed to support the shoulders.

Flexible connections such as cords F provided with hooks f which cooperate with rings or eyes 6 on opposite sides of the sling E are passed over pulleys G, hung from the depending portion 6 of the frame by means of the ring 9 on the pulley sheave which are slipped in the open slots 6 in said depending portion 6 To the end of the cord F is hung a receptacle or holder H for shotor other weighted bodies whereby the traction exerted upon the cord may be varied as desired, as will be readily understood.

Secured to each arm sling F is a flexible cord or connection L as by hooks Z and eyes Z each cord L extending up to the crossbar b at the top of the frame where it passes over a pulley Z suspended from a hook Z carried by said crossbar. The cord thence extends along over a second pulley Z, carried by said bar. The free end of the cord has attached to it a receptacle, or holder M containing shot or weighted bodies for varying the traction as desired. A series of hooks Z for carrying the pulleys Z are provided whereby the position ofthe shoulder supports may be adjusted horizontally or the tractions exerted at different angles. In each of the several flexible connections a spring balanced scale N is interposed which will indicate the tra ctive pressure.

From the above description it will be understood that a self-contained jury and frame is provided which can be readily set up or dismantled and which can be moved about easily so that it may be used either outdoors or within the house.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

1. In an apparatus such as described, the combination with the base or support, of the frame consisting of divergent standards secured to said base, and having forwardly extending top portions, crossbar connecting said top portions, head slings and shoulder slings, pulleys carried by said crossbar and top section of the frame, separate flexible supporting means connected at one end to said head slings and shoulder slings, and passing over said pulleys, and Weights suspended from said supporting means.

2. In an apparatus such as described, the combination with the frame consisting of divergent standards, forwardly extending top portions and cross bars connecting said top portions, a base or support upon which .said frame is mounted, pulleys carried by GUSTAVE W. HAAS.
