WEBB BROOMHALL, OF ClRCLEVl-LLE, Oki-IO, ASSIGNOR TO HIM- SELF AND ACKER KING, OF-SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 90,491, (lated May 25, 1869.
imnovnn COPPIN.
To all whom tt may concern.- Be it known that I, WEBB BROOMHALL, of Circleville, in the State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gofins; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, in which-'- l Figure l is a transverse vertical section of va coidn, with my improvement applied; l
Figure 2 is a detached view of one of my flanged and slotted pieces; and
Figure 3, au elevation of one end ofthe coiin, showingtbe lock. i
This invention consists in a combination of flanged metallic pieces and flanged metallic ,slotted pieces, so arrangednpon the under side ofthe cover and the in side of the coiin, as that the iianges of the formermay pass under the flanges of the latter on moving the cover to its place, fand`thus hold it securely Without the use of screws.
To enable those skilled in the artto make use' my invention, 'I now proceed to describe its construction and operation;
Similar let-ters,- iu the In the drawings- 1 a a are two oblong `pieces of metal, screwed yto the under side ofthe cover, longitudinally of the same, of a length of one and a half inch, one-quarter of an inch wide, and one-quarter of an inch thick, which pieces are furnished with anges a', one `to each lower and outer corner. v
To the inner surface of each ofthe sides of the coliin is screwed a slotted flat piece of metal, b, say one and a halt' inch long and thrce-quarters of an inch wide, with a flange, b', at its upper end, flush with the top of the coin.
If the cover be placed on the coffin so that the flanges a/ clear the flanges b', and then be shoved endwise, so' as to bripg the former under the latter, it is drawings, referto like paits.
plain that the two sets of flanges will hold the cover down.
At the opposite end, a staple may he attached to the one of the slotted and flanged pieces may be secured to the end of the cotiin, also at its centre, so that the into position, which connectionV serves to secure the cover from lateral displacement.
A s a matter of precaution, to prevent thc corpse from pressing out the sides of the coffin, it may sometimesbe found expedient to adjust the slot-ted and of and in contact with the sides of the col'n.
they may be brought into exactly the proper position by the action of the flanges a', passing under the iianges b', the screws in the pieces b being driven at first only far enough to just hold them from slipping, but not to prevent the flanges a from drawing them into place.
This done, the pieces b may be tightly 'screwed o n.
A t one end of the'cover is an eye, d', projecting downward, and on the end of the coiln, underneath, is a hook, d, which may be turned up in order to pass this, (the eye,) and then turned down to hold it. When this is done'the attachment of the coverto the coiin is complete, being effected in a very expeditious manner and without the aid of screws. The Vcover may be taken off in an equally-easy way.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the fianged pieces a a with the flanged and slotted pieces b b', as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the foregoing with the hook and eye [l d', substantially as described.
Witnesses: WEBB BROOMHALL.

under side of the cover, at the centre thereof, and
flange may enter the staple when the cover is moved' anged pieces in recesses, sunk transversely of the cover, and so that the flanges may come justoutside- The reason for making the pieces b slotted is that
