IMPROVEMENT IN FEIIDGAUGES POR PRINTING-PRESSES.
ttIgtStlgehtIt' nfettth tn im tigen @titers nttnt mit making tutti the stmt.'
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: y
' Be it known that I, C. POTTER, Jr., of Westerly, in the county of Washington, andfState of Rhode Island, have invented a newa'nd'improved Adjustable Feed-Guide for Printing-Presses; and I` do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make anduse the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to theletters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to a' new and improved adjustable feed-guide for printing-presses, and has for its object the facilitating of the adjustment of the guide', one screw only being manipulated in order to admit of the guide being adjusted in two different directions, which are required. In the accompanying` sheet of drawings- Figure A1 represents a side sectional view of my invention, tallten in tho .line :l: fig. 2.
Figure 2, a'plan or top view of the same, with the old or present plan shown in red.
Figure 3, a side sectional viewl of the old or present plan, takenin the line yy, iig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A represents a shaft, on which the guides B are secured, and C represents a section of the drum-cylinder, which is provided, as usual, with -nippers, to catch the sheets and convey them around to the form on the bed below; and D represents a portion of the feed-table, on which the sheets of paper are fed to the press. The guides B, it will be understood, serre as Vstops for the edges of the sheets to bear or rest against previous to the nippers on cylinder C grasping them.l These guides insure the sheets being grasped while'the latter are in a'proper relative position with the cylinder, in order to admit of the sheets-being correctly registered, or receiving Vthe impression evenly, so as to leave a margin of uniform width at its sides and at the top and bottom. The guides are composed of a metal strip or plate, a, bent downward at its front end, as shown at b, iig. l. The plateis secured by two screws, D D', to a box, composed of two parts, E E', which encircle o-grasp the shaft A, and are made to clutch it firmly by means of the screws D D', which pass through an oblong slot, c, in the strip or plate a, through the`upper part E, and into the lower part E of the box, asshown clearly in fig. 1. The strip or .plate a is held' in position bythe screw D', which is provided with a dat head, 0Z,to serve as a thumb-piece for the convenience of turning it. By unscrewing the screw'D, the box may be loosened on the shaft A, and' consequentlythe box moved laterally on the shaft, and the guide a consequently moved or adjusted laterally; and whilcthe'screw D is thus unscrewed, the guide a may be adj-usted further forward or backward,
-as desired, asthe screw D not only clamps the two parts E E to th-e shaft, but also clamps the strip orpplate a to the upper part E. The screw D simply holds the front ends 'of the parts E E ofthe box together, and also serres to retain the guide .in proper place or position. My improvement, therefore, possesses the advantage of requiring but a single manipulation of one screw only to adjust the guide, either laterally, or forward and backward.'
Haring thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The two screws D D and slotted guide-plate B, in combination with the box, composed of two parts, E E', fitted to the shaft A, and all arranged substantiallyin the manner as and for the purpose set forth.
