T0 'WHOM IT MAY CONCERN': y
Be it known that I,- WARREN RICHARDS, Jr., of CinCinnatLHamilton ceunty0hio, have linventeda new and useful; Gauge for Embossing-Presses,.'&c.; and' I do hereby declare the following to be a'full, clear, and' exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of :this specification. i l n My improvement relatesrto such presses as are employed for embossing or. stamping initials, monograms, lite., on paper, envelopes, and cards and my invention consists in a gauge, to bia-attached to such presses,- whereby the paper, envelopes, Suc., can be speedily andaccurately adjusted, 'so as to admit of the mpressidnbeing'made upon the article at any desired part of the same.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure lis a perspective view of auembossingpress furnished with my improved gauge, arid l Figure v2 is a vertical section through'the gauge onen enlarged scale. 'A represents an embossing-press, of the usual ferm, and this press is provided with a table or bed-plate,B, which has secured to-it, at I, a h-inged and slotted plate, C. A
The plate vC is provided with a number of 'transverse slots, D, a'diagonal slot, E, and a longitudinal one, l
F, the latter having a branch, Gr, which is parallel or nearly so with the slots.D. These slots terminate at one end in apertures d e g,.'for purposes which will be described herenfter.- i
Projecting upwardlyrthrongh the slots are-'short studs or steps, H, having stems h, to which are secured springs I, 'the latter being suiiicientl'ysti toprvent any accidental displacement' of the studs,'a.nd yet to'permit of their being moved to any desired position by a slight Ydegree of force.
The bed-plate B is recessedfat J, so as to permit the srtudstraversing the slots without coming in contact with anything below the plate C. Screws c retain thefslotted plate Vdown firmly upon the bed-plate of the press. When the press is to be employed forembossing envelopes, one of the latter is 'placed upon the bed-plate so as to bring the die to bear upon the .envelope at any desired point, such as in one cornerfat its mid-length, or on'the'iiap, anda number of stops inthe transverse slots D are adjusted-to theend of the envelope, and the stop in the longitudinal slot, F, is brought to bear upon the bottom of the envelope, as clearly shown in ig.,1.l In embossing note-paper and other large articles, the stop is switched o" from the longitudinal slotF into the branch G, and the upper end of' the paper is gauged by the stop in the diagonal slot E, the edge of the sheet bearing 4against the 'stops inthe transverse slots D, as Aindicated by the dotted red lines.
Ifat any time it should bedesired vto remove one or more f the stops, it can be done bysimply raising the plate C upon its hinge, as Vshow-n in iig. 2,'and dropping the stops down through the apertures at the end of the slots.
It Wiil be seen that the gauge can beradjusted to snit envelopes, paper,"cards, 8vo., in a Inoments time, and
it is so simple'in its construction there is no liability'ef it gettingoutjf order.
The-slottedpplate-need not be hinged, but it can be screwed,.or otherwise rigidly attached to the table of A modification ofy my invention maybe made byomittingthesprings, and screwfthreading the upper ends of the stops, so as to engage-with a nut, by 4which the stops c an be 'retained atany position along the slots.
I 'claim herein as new, and of my invention-7- 'l Y Y 1. The' arrangement, substantially as descr'ibed, oi' the slotted plate C, stops H, and springs` I, orther equivalents, as and for the purpose specified. p
2. Ifalso claim thecombination of the longitudinal slot F and branch slot G, for the object explained.
In testimony of which invention, I hereunto set my hand. y y,
' l WARRENRICHARDS, JRt
