Description

ritmi Quatre i JAMESNVILSON, JR., OF NW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO H WILLIAM QUAIL, OFVILLIAMSBURG, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 94,053, dated August 24,1869.
The Schedule referred to n these Letters Patent and making parl: of the saine.
reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
forming part of this specification, in which- Figure lis a plan view of my improved galley. Figure 2 is a-detail sectional view of the same, taken through the line a: x, fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for itsobject to furnish animproved printers galley, by the use of which the time lost in making register on book-forms, and the enormous wear and tear of' types under the planer, and on the press, when off their feet, may be very greatly diminished, and which shall, at the same time, be simple and inexpensive in construction; and
It consists in the.co1'nbination of the adjustable arm and gauge with au ordinary galley, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents an ordinary printers galley, 'about the construction of which there is nothing new, ex-
cept that there is a dovetailed groove formed in the outer side of its lower flange, a', as shown in iig. 2.
B is an arm, of such a length as to lit into the galley A, as shown in fig. l, thus forming a fourtli side or iiangeA to saidgalley.
` The lower part b1, of the arm- B, extends out at right angles to the main .body of said alan, and has a .groove formed in its underside, to fit upon the lower ange a of' the galley A. l
-The grooved part, 111, of the arm B, may be formed,
Aif desired, with a dovetailed tongue fitting into the dovetailed groove "of the flange a of the galley A, but this is not essential.
The arm B may be secured in place, when adjusted, by means of a thumb-screw, b2, passing in through the outer part'fiof the arm B, and the forward end of which enters the dovetailed groove ofthe flange a', as shown in figs. 1 and 2.
C is a gauge, which may be made in the form of a square plate, ttiug upon the outer side of the flange a of the galley A, and which is provided with a dovctailed tongue, tting into the dovetailed groove of the ange a', vso as to keep the gauge G always true.
The gauge O is secured in position, when adjusted,
by a thumb-screw, c', the forward end of which enters the dovetailed groove of the ange d.
The gauge G, 'when adjusted to the length of the sample page, forms a perpetual gauge forv any desired number of pages, and in making up,lwheu the arm B is moved to the gauge-O," it tells atonce whether the page is of the right length.
I claim as new, and desire' to secure by Letters Y Patent- 1. The combination of an adjustable arm with an ordinary printers? galley, for the purpose set forth.
2. The arm B b1, constructed substantially as described, and provided vvwith a thumbscrew, b2, in ccnibination with the ange a', of an ordinary printers"- galley, as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The gauge O, constructed substantially as herein shown and described, and provided with athumbscrew, c', in combination with the galley A and adjustable arm B, as and for the purpose set forth.
l The above speciiication of my invention signed by me, thisd day of February, 1869.
WVitnesses: JAMES WILSON, JR.
