J. MOB-$8,01 PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA. Letters Patent No. 67,338, dated July 30, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN SQUARES.
fitlgt Eulntulz referrer in in first fixture-35mm mm making and at the same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, J; Monss, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an' improved Square; and I do hereby declare the following to bee. full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists of a square, constructed in the peculiar manner fully described hereafter, so that. the blade can be adjusted in the stock, and the instrument rendered serviceable under circumstances which would not admit of the employment of an ordinary square.
In order to enable others skilled'in the art to make and use my-invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which.
Figure 1 is a sectional view of my improved square.
Figure 2, a transverse section on the line 1-2, fig. 1.
Figure 3, a perspective view; and
Figure 4, a view illustrating the advantages of my invention.
Similar letters refer to. similar parts throughout the several views.
A is the stock, and B the blade of the square, the former having on its opposite parallel edges the metal I facings a a, anda't the top a slot for the reception and guidance of the blade B, which has an elongated opening, 6, the stem of a thumb-screw passing through this opening and through the stock into a nut, 2, let into the stock, as seen in fig. 2, so that the blade may be secured after adjustment. t is essential that the and f, fig. 1, of the slot in the stock should be atright angles to the two edges a a of the same, for it should be understood that the stem of the thumb-screw is smaller than the opening 6 of the blade, so that the lower edge It of the latter may be adjustedaccurately to the endfof the slot before it is secured by the screw, for upon the accuracy of this adjustment depends the truth of the instrument. One of the advantages of my improved square is illustrated in fig. 4, where n: represents a shoulder or ledge, which has to be made at right angles to the face 9.
A square of'the ordinary construction, with permanent stock and blade, could not be used for making the proper test unless the blade were much shorter than those usually made; but after loosening the thumb-screw the blade B can be adjusted so that one end may project 'to the desired limited extent to suit the width of the ledge 0:, care beingtaken, as before remarked, to adjust the lower edge h of the blade "truly to the end f of the slot before the said blade is secured by the thumb-screw.
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The slotted blade B and thumb-screw and nut, or their equivalents, in combination with the stock A, its parallet edges :2 a, and bottom fat the slot, arranged at right angles with the said edges, the whole being constructed as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony whereot'I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses- .J'. MORSS.
I Witnesses:
CHARLES E. Foszrnn, W. J. R. DELANI.
