Description

G. RICHARDS.
Wagon Standkd.
Patented Nov. 9, 1869.
Ive/u 676/507 new seat fitted cam.
Letters Patent No. 96,731, dated November 9, 1869; antedated October 30, 1869.
IMPROVED WAGON-STANDARD.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the samev To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Gnonen RICHARDS, of Richland Centre, in the county of Richland, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Bolsters; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and'exact detion and arrangement of a wagon-bolster, with stake pivoted to the end of the same.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, part in section, and
Figure 2'is an end view.
A represents the bolster, which is provided at its end with a metal cap, B; said cap extendinga suitable distance along the top of the bolster, to prevent its wearing away as soon as is generally the case without such metal protection.
The end of the cap B is provided with a recess, in which fits the circularproject-ion a on the inner side of the plate 0, whichis placed at the end of the bolster.
A screw, b, is then passed through the centre of the circular projection a, into the bolster A, thus pivotin the plate G to the same.
The plate 0 is, at its upper end, provided with a horizontal extension, having a dovetail on its upper side, in which the lower end of the stakeD is.s1ipped.
The stake is thus secured to said horizontal ex-' tension by the screw-bolt c-and nut- 11.
The plate 0 is held in place, so as to secure the. upright position of the stake D, by means of a springbolt, 0, placed in the lower portion of the bolster, and projecting through a hole in the cap B, and into a hole in the lower end of the plate 0.
A thumb-piece, 1, allows said bolt to be withdrawn from the, bolt, so that the stake can be turned down.
It will be seen that the end of the cap B is bevelled outward, toward the lower end, so that when the stake is turned down, it moves away from the box or log that is upon the bolsters.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The holster A, provided at its ends with a metal cap, B, constructed as described, and bevelled as shown, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
'2, In combination with the bolsterA and metal cap B, the plate 6, provided with a horizontal extension at its upper edge, and with a circular projection, a, on its inner side,'tl1rough which the screw 1) passes, all substantially as shown and described.
3. Securing the stake D to the horizontal extension of the plate 0, by means of a dovetail, screw, and nut, substantially as shown and described. v
4. The arrangement of the cap B, pivoted plate 0,
and spring-bolt c, with thumb-piece i, substantially as,
and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand,.this 17th day of March, 1869.
' GEO. RICHARDS.
