Letters Patent No. 69,342, dated October 1, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTERS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY HILTS, Jr., of Springdale, county of Hamilton, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tongues For Reapers; and I hereby declare that the following is a true, exact, and full description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. In the annexed drawings, which make a part of this specification- Figure 1 represents the frame of a reaping machine with the tongue attachment. 7
Figure 2 is a plan view of the attachment.
The letter A represents the pole or tongue. 0 is a metal plate of suitable width and thickness, with a radial arm, 6, extending from it, the end of which is bolted to the tongue. The plate 0 is quadrantal in form, and is cut out of the sameplate of metal with the radial arm 6. The inner end of O is alsoholted to the tongue, with the convex edge placed outward. The under side of the tongue is furnished with a device corresponding exactly in form with plate 0 and radial arm 6, and held in position with the same bolts that confine O and 6 t0 the tongue A. E designates a bar, the inner end of which is bolted to the reaping machine, as seen in fig. 1. Against the outer side of bar E is made to rest the tongue A, which has an inward play on a pivot that passes through it and through the metal plates m, one plate 0 resting on the tongue and on bar E at top, and the other at bottom. The Whiflle-tree H is confined to the tongue with the same bolt that attaches the plates m to tongue A. On the surface of the plate 0 that rests on the top of tongue A is fastened the stop S, against which the whifile-tree rests at one end, when it is desired to turn the reaping machine to the right. The plates 0 have corresponding perforations to receive a'holt, which, when in position, will arrest the motion of tongue A to the right at any angle the operator may require.
The advantage I claim for my tongue-attachment is the increase of leverage by operating it in advance of the reaper, and thus saving both time and power in harvesting a field of grain.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure-by Letters Patent, is-- The quadrantal plate O, when provided with stop S and perforations z i, in combination with bar E and tongue A, all operating in the manner and for the purpose described. I
In testimony whereof I set my signature in nresence of two witnesses.
