Description

G. RICHARDS.
Wagon Standard.
No. 94,340. Patented Aug. 31, 1869.
.18 I /Zr I #pZngs Iva-0671:2012 x dished finders page one.
Letters Patent No. 94,340, dated August 31,1869.
IMPROVEIJ WAGON-STANDARD.
'lhe Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the nine.
To all whom it may concernr Be it known that I, Gnonen RICHARDS, of Rich land Centre, in the county of Richland, and in the- State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in wagon Bolsters and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to thelet-ters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction ofa wagon-bolster, with hinged or pivoted stakes, so that the stakes can be easily moved from their vertical position for the purpose of taking off or putting on the wagon-body, rolling .on logs, Sic.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation;
Figure 2 is a horizontal section;
Figure 3 is an end view; and
Figure 4, a vertical section.
A represents a wagon-bolster, provided at the end with a metal cap, B.
At the lower end of the cap'B is a bolt, C, passing through'the same, which bolt is at its inner end provided with a flange or projection, D, which prevents the bolt from coming out.
At the outer end of said bolt is an can-E, which isinserted between two ears at the lower end of the stake F, and a. pin passing through the same, effectually pivots the stake to the bolster.
Through the lower end oi the stake F, above the point where it is pivoted, a bolt, G, is passed, which, inside of the stake, is surrounded by a spiral spring,
a. One end of this spring is attached to the stake,
and the other end to the bolt, so that the spring holds the bolt in one position, and if the bolt is turned, then the spring will bring it back to its first position.
The inner end of the bolt G is provided with projections, b b, which catoh on the inside of the cap B, the bolt entering through the slot 0, seen in fig. 3.
This slot is elongated, so that when the bolt is turned the projections b b may enter the same, and the spring turn them to catch on the inside of the cap, and thus hold the stake in an upright position.
On each side of the bolt G, in the stake I isa projection, d, which fits into a recess, 0, in the cap, as seen in fig. 2.
When the bolt G is unlocked and withdrawn from the cap, it will be seen that the stake F will not only turn over forward, but may also be let down to either side.
Having thus fullydescribed my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Pivoting the stake of a wagon-bolster to a bolt which is itself pivoted'in a cap on the end of said bol ster, allowing the stake to be lowered in any direction desired, substantially as herein set forth;
2. Securing the stake F in an upright position to the cap B on the end of the bolster A, by means of the bolt G, having projections b b, and operated by the spring a, all substantially as shown and described.
3. The arrangement of the cap B, having slot 0 and recesses e e,'with the bolt 0, car E, stake F, bolt G, spring a, and projections d d, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 9th day of April, 1869.
a GEORGE RICHARDS.
