IMPRQV'ED SETTEE The Schedule referred to in these Lettere Patent and making part of the same.

To all whom it ma/y concern:

Be it known that I, WESLEY CHASE, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Settees; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification.

My invention consists in forming the `pairs of legs of the settee of single pieces of timber, bent into the required shape, the legs being connected by girts or ties, on which the seat rests.

In the drawing- Figure 1 represents a perspective View of my improved settee, and

Figure 2, a vertical longitudinal section of a portion of the same.

A may represent the seat, and B, the back of the settee, both of which may be constructed in any prey ferred manner.

C C, C (l, represent the legs, and D D, the arms, each pair of which, O G D, I construct of a single piece of suitable timber, bent into the required shape, as represented. I

The pairs of legs G C are connected by girts orties E E, which serve to support the seat, as shown.

The legs may also be connected by transverse and longitudinal bars or sta-ys E F, and the former of said bars may serve also for the attachment of suitable braces, G, preferably of metal, and curved as shown, and which are attached at their other ends, through the medium of transverse cleats a', if necessary, to the under side of the seat A.

Braces, H, similar to G, may also beapplied between tbe arms D and the upper edge of the back, B, when said back is stationary, as shown.

The several partsmay be connected to the legs and arms, and to each other, by screws, as shown, or in other suitable manner.

By the above construction, I am enabledto produce a strong, light, elastic, and ornamental article, at a comparatively small cost. I

The arms and legs, which have heretofore been the most expensive and troublesome parts, both in the original manufactureand use, owing tb the difficulty of sawing out, or turning and joining the several parts, and the liability of the parts to become separated or broken, are, by my invention, adapted to be easily and cheaply made, entirely free from these objections, and in such a manner as to secure the maximum elasticity and strength of the material used.

The braces, as applied, bind and support the structure, without detracting from its elasticity.

I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the bent legs and arms C C D, slot A, and girts or ties E, when constructed and connected in the manner hereinrepresented and described.

To the above speciiication of my improvement in settees, I have signed my hand, this 10th day of March, i869.
