Description

PATENTED AUG. 11, 1908.
J. HULBERT.
BAG HOLDER. APPLICATION FILED DEG. 31, 1907.
wihmaoeo JAMES HULBERT, OF ASHTABULA, OHIO.
BAG-HOLDER.
- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 11, 1908i Application filed December 31, 1907. Serial No. 408,724.
To all whom it may concern:
.Be it known that I, JAMES HULBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashtabula, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Holders, of which the following is a specification, referenee being had to the accompanying drawlugs.
My invention relates to improvements in bag holders and more particularly to the one set forth in Patent #862,269, granted to me October 15, 1907.
The object of the present invention is to improve and simplify the. construction and operation of the device and thereby render it more convenient and durable and less expensive.
'i-th the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and ar rangeinent of arts hereinafter described and claimed; and iliustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved bag holder; Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the same; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the clam and Fig. 4 is a similar; view of aportion of the band showing a modified form 'ofbag supporting spur.
My improved bag holder comprises a supporting and attaching plate 1 which is flat and preferably of rectangular form so that it may be engaged with a wall or other vertical supp-rt. An aierture 2 is formed in the .upper. portion o the late for the reception of a nail or the like from Which the device may be suspended. Connected to the plate 1 by a leaf hinge 3 is a bag holding loop or ring 4 constructed of a band of resilient metal bent into circular form so thatits ends overlap. These overlapping ends of the band are slidably engaged with each other so that the ring may be made larger or smaller to fit the mouths of bags of different sizes, and said ends are 'adjustifbly united by a clamp 5 in the form of a rectangular loop or sleeve through which the said overla p ng ends of the band or rin are passer in opposite directions clear 1 shown in Figs. 1- and 3. Said ends are adapted to slide freely in the clamping band 5 and they are adjustably retainod therein by aclamping screw 6 having a Winged head or linger piece 7 at its outer end and having its threaded end screwed into a threaded aperture 8 in the inner side side of the ring face of the clamping band 5 is formed an 30 inte ral spur or prong 9 which projects up- Wart ly and outwardly and is adapted to engage and support the bag at the front of the ring. The bag is similarly supported at each may be formed as shown in Fig. 1 by mak ng V-shape or U-shape slits in said ring to provide tongues and then bending said tongues upwardly and pointing them to provide the integral upwardly and outwardly projecting spurs or they may be formed as shown 1n ig. 4 by makin in the upper edge of the 'ring or band 4 adjacent V-shape notches 11 to form an intermediate tapered spur 12 which is then bent outwardly so that it may more readily engage the bag. Thedattcr is supported at its rear by clamping it bet-ween the projecting roughened or serrated heads 13 of screws or similar transverse fastenings 14 which unite the two leaves 3*, 3 of these hinge 3 to the plate 1 and the ring 4 as moreclearly shown in Fig. 2
. The hinge 3 is constructed and arranged so that the ring 4 cannot dropbelow its horizontal position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and can swing from such position to the vertical position shown in dotted lines in said figure. When in such dotted line position it is disposed against the wall or other support so that the device occupies but little space. so
Said ring is adapted to be retained in its elevated or vertical position by a spring catch 15 in the form of a spring plate secured at its upper end at 16 upon the upper portion of the plate 1 and having its lower end formed with a hook 17 which, when the ring 4 is lowered or horizontal, bears against the inner face of said ring and. when the latter is swungup- Wardly, it is adapted to drug under the bottom edge raised position as clearly shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
From the foregoing it will besecn that my improved bag holder is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction and at the 10s same time strong and durable and that it may be quickly and easily adjusted to receive bags of different sizes. The provision of the spurs 10 on each side of the ring, the
spur 9 on the clamp at the front of the ring and the claiuping heads 13 on the hinge fastenings at the rear of the ring enable the bag 4 by similar spurs 10 which 5 of the same to support it in its loo to be quickly and easily engaged with and disengaged from the device and When en gaged with it will be effectively supported by it While being filled. It Will-be noted that the band 5 not only serves to adjustably unitethe ends of the ring' but also to support the bag at the front of the ring; and furthermore since said band sitioned at the center of the front of the ring without regard to the adjustment of the latter for large or small bags.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. A bag holder comprising a flat attaching plate, a bag supporting ring consisting of a resilient metal band bent into circular form and having its ends overlapping and slidably engaged, a hinge having one leaf arranged upon the center of the outer face ofthe ring and its other leaf arranged u on said plate, transverse fastenings passeci through the leaves of the hinge and the plate and ring, said fastenings having their ends formed with roughened projecting heads to clamp the bag between them, a clamping band to slidabiy receive the overlapping ends of the ring, said band being formed at its front with an integralbag supporting spur and at its rear with a threaded opening, arrangcdin the latter, and spur upon each side of the integral therewith.
a bag so porting ring ant formed 5 is loose it may be po-.
a clamping screw 2. A bag holder comprising a fiat attaehing plate, a bag supporting ring consisting of a resilient metal band bent into circular form and having its ends overlapping and siidably engaged, a hinge having one leaf arranged upon the center of the outer face of the ring and its other leaf arranged upon said plate, transverse fastenings passed through the leaves of the hinge and the plate and ring, said fastenings having their ends formed with roughened projecting heads to clamp the bag betweenthein, a clamping band to slidably receive the overlapping ends of the ring, said band being formed at its front with an integral bag supporting spur and at its rear with a threaded opening, a clamping screw arranged, in the latter, a bag su p upon each side of the ring and fermed integral therewith by cutting the same and bending a portionoutwardly, and a spring catch secured upon the upper portion of said plate orting spur and having its free end formed with a hook to engage the ring and support it in an ele vated or vertical position, substantially as described.
Intestimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of'two Witnesses.
JAMES IHULBERT.
