Description
B. P. ELLIS.
BAG HOLDER.
. (No Model.)
' Patented Feb. 5
WITNESSES IINiTED STATES PATENT GrrrcE.
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN ELLIS, OF IVAYNE, ILLINOIS.
BAG-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 397,346, dated February 5, 1889.
Application filed July .19, 1888. $erial No. 280,355. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN FRANKLIN ELLIS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at \Vayne, in the county of Du Page and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in bag-holders, the object thereof being to provide a simple and effective device to which a bag can be attached to hold the mouth of the same open, said device also being provided with means for attaching the same to a support, as a bin or barrel; and my invention consists in a bag-holder made of a single red of metal, the terminal portions being bent to form hooks, while the central portion thereof is bent upon itself and downwardly to assist in retaining the bag, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims- In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved bagholder. Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing the bag attached thereto. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the bag in position upon the holder.
A refers to a bar of metal. of suitable size, which is bent to form a circular portion, a, the ends of the rod being bent together or looped upon themselves, as shown at b, so as to provide a downwardly-projecting portion. The ends are then coiled one or more times around the rod, and then bent upwardly to form books 0, the ends of which are pointed. It will be observed that the downwardlyprojecting port-ion Z) is inclined, so that when the device is attached to a bin or other object the hooks will pass over the upper edge of said bin, and the aforesaid downwardlyprojecting portion 1) will press against the side of the bin, so as to clamp or jam the bag against the same. The rod, where it is coiled around the portion a, will re-enforce or stiffen the same, and will locate the upwardly-projecting hooks c at a slight distance from the center, so that the hooks will prevent the parts rocking.
To secure a bag to my improved holder, it is drawn through the coil or ring a and the rear portion of the bag placed over and under the projecting portion 1), after which the front edge of the bag is turned down over the ring a. This will securely hold the bag in position, and as thebag is filled the weight therein will cause pressure upon the dowuiwardly-projecting portion b, so as to press the bag against said portion and bin.
The device hereinbefore described is extremely simple and cheap, and can be attached not only to bins or receptacles, but also to objects having flat tops, into which the pointed ends of the hooks will press.
I am aware that it is not broadly new to provide a bag-holder with means for holding the bag open by passingover the bag-holder and over the edges of the same, and I do not claim such construction, broadly; but
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A bag-holder consisting of a band or hoop provided at one side with a tongue or loop extending down and outward from the hoop and having on either side of said tongue vertical shanks, each terminating at top in a hook, substantially as described.
2. A bag-holder consisting of a band or hoop provided at one side with a tongue eX- tending down and outward from the hoop and having on either side of said tongue a vertical shank terminating in a sharp-pointed hook, substantially as described.
8. A bag-holder constructed of a single length of metal and consisting of a hoop provided at one side with a tongue extending down and outward and having on either side of said tongue a vertical shank terminating at top in a hook, substantially as described.
