To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY W. ZINN, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Eddy, in the county of Kay and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in buckles of that type which are commonly designated cross line buckles and are so constructed as to enable the cross line to be easily and quickly adjusted to any desired position upon the main lines The object of the invention is to design a simple and inexpensive buckle of this character comprising few and durable parts which can be readily assembled to produce the finished article.

For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

My improved buckle comprises a body formed of a basel and oppositely disposed side flanges 2. A stud 3 projects upwardly from the base 1 of the body portion and is designed to engage any one of a series of openings in a strap, such as a main or hand line of harness, said strap fitting against the base between the side flanges 2. A tongue 4 is journaled between the side flanges 2 at one end thereof, and the extremity of the tongue is formed with a lateralprojection 5 designed to engage a stra such as a cross line, which is also receive between the side flanges 2 and which may fit against the hand line. The pivot end of the tongue 4 is bifurcated and the two members 6 of the bifurcation are pivoted upon a cross bar 7 extending from one flange to the opposite. In order to revent lateral displacement of the tongue, s eeves 8 encircle the cross bar 7 and are interposed between the two members 6 of the bifurcation and thecorresponding side flanges 2. The tongue 4 is designed to swing inwardly between the side flanges and over the stud 3, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3.

A transverse shaft 9 is journaled in the side flanges 2 near the opposite end thereof, at a point contiguous to the swinging end of the tongue 4 when the latter is turned inwardly between the flanges, and the said shaft is formed with a double crank 10, the

cross bar of which is designed to engage the tongue 4 preferably substantially in line with the stud 3, to lock the tongue in closed position. It is to be particularly noted that the side members of the double crank arepf suflicient length that when the shaft 9 is turned to carry the crank outwardly from the tongue, a clearance space is formed for the tongue, so that the latter may be moved freely outward in an opposite direction.

In order to hold the locking device constituted by the shaft 9 and its double crank, in operative position, one end of the shaft 9 is formed with a lever extension 11 having a spring action and designed to engage a lug 12 projecting laterally from one of the side flanges. Such lug may be conveniently formed by extending an end of the cross bar 7 Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

A buckle, comprising a body portion embodying a base and side flanges, a tongue pivoted between the said flanges and provided with means for engaging a strap, upon the movement of said tongue between said flanges, and a shaft also journaled between said flanges, said shaft being formed with a double crank, the cross bar of which is adapted to engage the tongue upon the movement of the crank inwardly towards the flanges and in a direction towards the pivotpoint of the tongue, and means for holding said shaft rigidly, with its crank in engagement with the tongue, the side bars of the crank being of suflicient length to permit the tongue to pass freely between them, as and for the purpose set forth.
